Josephine Winkler
Josephine (Zachmeier) Winkler, age 91, of Fargo, ND, died Friday, May 3rd , at Bethany Homes Retirement Community, Fargo, North Dakota. Vigil services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in the chapel of Bethany Homes Retirement Community, 201 S. University, Fargo. A Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Oriska. Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Oriska.
Josephine Zachmeier, the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Savage) Zachmeier,was on November 27, 1921in Mandan, ND. She attended school in Mandan and worked in several clerical positions before joining the United States Navy in 1943. During her four years as a WAVE, she obtained the rank of chief petty officer. The GI bill helped her to attend Valley City State Teachers College where she earned a teaching certificate. She was included in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. During her college years, she met and became engaged to Walter Winkler. They delayed their wedding plans when Josephine was called back by the Navy to serve during the Korean War. They were married October 25, 1952, and farmed at Oriska. Josephine worked as a substitute teacher and a children’s librarian at the Valley City Public Library. They retired in 1980, but remained on the farm until Walt’s death in 1986. Josephine moved to Valley City and eventually to Fargo. She was involved in activities for retired teachers and women veterans. Throughout her lifetime, Josephine was a volunteer and champion for many causes and was known as a giving, gracious and courageous woman. She enjoyed traveling with her family, reading and card games.

Neil Ole Iverson, 60, of Tipp City, Ohio passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. He was born April 10, 1953 in Fargo, ND to Ole and Joyce (Owen) Iverson. He is preceded in death by his mother; Joyce, wife; Kimberlee (Mahaney) Iverson and brother in-law; Bill Shields. He is survived by his father; Ole Iverson, Fargo, North Dakota, children; Heather and her husband Ben Wead, Tipp City, William “Will” Iverson, Dayton and Rachel Iverson and her fiancé Josh Holman, Tipp City, sisters; Jennifer Thomas, New Jersey and Jackie (Harlan) Jordheim, North Dakota, 3 granddaughters; Savannah and Gracie Wead and Rylee Holman along with several nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Neil was a graduate of North Dakota State School of Science. He was a self-employed musician, a sales representative for United Artists Cable and a member of Tipp City United Methodist Church. Neil’s first love was his family, but he had a passion for music and church. A Celebration of Life Service was held Friday, April 26 at Tipp City United Methodist Church. C. Russell J. Ruppert was born September 19, 1922 in Portal, ND to Rose and John Ruppert. After completing college he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in Okinawa Signal Corp.

Juel "Lud" Robert Mattson was born October 2, 1954 in Park River, ND to D. Kenneth and Marilynn Mattson. Juel died peacefully in his home in Detroit Lakes, MN on May 2, 2013.
D. Kenneth Mattson and his family moved to Mahnomen in 1955, where Juel attended Mahnomen Public Schools. Juel graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1973. He attended Northland Community College in Thief River Falls, MN for medical technician. Juel also received his EMT certificate in 1978. Dick passed away on May 1, 2013 at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX at the age of 63.

Gladys was born January 24, 1920, on the family farm west of Nash, North Dakota, the daughter of John and Johanna (Dahl) Rutherford. She was raised and educated in Walsh County and rural Nash schools and graduated from Hoople High School in 1938. Gladys and two of her sisters, Alfreda (Babe) and Mabel owned and operated a ladies fashion shop in Drayton in the early 1940's. In May of 1941 she met and fell in love with her life's companion, Dean Brosseau, just out of Molar Barber College in Fargo, and who'd bought and set up a barber shop directly across the street from her apparel business. With World War II raging, Dean was drafted into the army and sent to basic training, desert maneuvers and eventually the ground war in France, Belgium, Austria and Germany. In the midst of all this they were married on November 15, 1942. Gladys was in the restaurant business with her sister (Babe's Drive-In), worked for a local clothier and then on January 1, 1956 went to work at Drayton State Bank where she remained for the next 26 years as a teller, cashier and Vice-President. She was a self-taught pianist, canvas painter and a closet poet. Dean passed away on January 29, 1992, just 10 months short of their 50th wedding anniversary. Gladys and Dean as a team were an attractive and accomplished musical couple, and would often entertain at community and family events with their vocal duets, Gladys on lead and Dean singing tenor.

She attended schools in Wahpeton, ND, and graduated from Wahpeton High. She attended the University of North Dakota and is a graduate of North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton, ND. She worked in retail loss prevention, Daytons, Fargo, ND and was an investigator for Macy’s East, McLean, VA. She was a caregiver for her mother until her mother’s death.
Candice enjoyed playing piano, politics, lively debate, cooking and traveling, especially road trips.
