Weather Talk: Last Wednesday saw big temperature swing
This past Wednesday, the low at the Grand Forks Airport was minus 17 degrees. Later in the day, a strong surge of mild Pacific air moved across the Red River Valley, which pushed the temperature to 39 degrees during the early evening hours. That 39-degree high was a record for the date.

Darlene Ann Ness, 85, passed away peacefully on January 15th 2014 surrounded by her family under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley in Moorhead, MN.

Darlene Ann Driscoll was born November 5th, 1928 in Glyndon, MN to Charles and Barbara Driscoll. Darlene was raised on the Driscoll Family Farm just outside of Glyndon, MN. She attended and graduated from Glyndon High School in 1946. She then attended and graduated from Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND. After graduating, she started her career at The Bell Telephone Company in Fargo. Darlene married Milton Ness on April 19th, 1949 and they began their life together. Milton's employment took them to many places including California, South Dakota, Rochester and Dilworth MN. They settled in Moorhead, MN in 1966 where they would raise their three children, Greg, Steve, and Kelli.

Marlys Ardell Braaten was born to Gina (Wold) and Andrew Braaten on January 6, 1924 in Wahpeton, ND. She attended Homestead Township #1 school for eight years and then attended school in Wyndmere, ND. She graduated at the top of her class in 1942. Marlys graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead with a B.A. in Business Education, English and Economics in 1946. The day after she graduated she started teaching Business Education in Princeton High School, Minnesota. The first day of teaching she met Edward Anderson from Minneapolis, her future husband, who was also on the staff at Princeton.

Wayne K. Anderson, 61, of Fargo, ND, formerly of Arthur, ND, died Tuesday, January 8, 2014, in Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo.

Wayne Kent Anderson was born in Fargo on January 7, 1953, to Arvid and Janet Anderson, when the family lived at Hillsboro, ND. In March, 1953, his family moved to a farm at Arthur, ND, where he lived for 44 years. Wayne was born with Down's syndrome, and he enjoyed farm life and learning to drive tractors and trucks. With his three-wheeler, he cleaned the ditches along Highway #18 by the farm and his summer job was mowing grass on the farmstead with his IH Cub tractor.

Howard Black, 85, finally got his wish to “go home” surrounded by his family at his north Fargo home Thursday, January 9th 2014.

Howard Earl Black was born June 24th, 1928 to Clifford and Lotty (Bjugstad) Black in the village of Venlo, Ransom County, North Dakota. He went to rural one-room elementary schools, and earned $2 a month for his family by carrying a bucket of water to the school daily, occasionally arriving with the water frozen over. Eventually the family moved to Anselm, and Howard went to high school in Sheldon, ND, where he played basketball, football and baseball for the Sheldon Shadows. He graduated in 1946, and was the valedictorian of his class.

David G. Johnson
David G. Johnson, 89, of Ada, Minnesota passed away January 8, 2014, at Benedictine Care Community, Ada under the care of Hospice.

David was born to Gustaf and Albertina (Wilkens) Johnson, on December 25, 1924, on the family farm in Pleasant View Township. He attended country school thru eighth grade and then attended Northwest Agricultural College in Crookston, MN for 1 year studying agriculture and animal husbandry. He farmed the family farm in Pleasant View Township which was established in 1911 by his Father and continuing with son, Lynn and later joined by grandson Chuck. David was a long time producer of certified seed, registered Hereford cattle, and Duroc hogs. He served the agricultural community thru his time on boards such as Ada Co-op Oil Association, Red River Valley Winter Shows, Norman County Crop Improvement, Minnesota Hereford Association, and served as a Norman County 4-H leader.
