Pet Care: Should cats roam free?
Dear Dr. Fox: I was disappointed in your recent response to G.L. in Washington, D.C., the feral cat colony caretaker. Instead of providing him with a link to Alley Cat Allies (alleycat.org), a nonprofit group dedicated to helping cats, you persisted in providing antiquated arguments for the death of cats. The website has an entire section that would have answered G.L.’s questions much better than you did, which was to advocate he euthanize his cats.

Mike Rosmann: Holiday season evokes best in farm people
The holiday season, stretching from Thanksgiving Day until New Year’s Day, is one of the happiest periods for many farm families. Although harvest is usually not finished when Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving Day in October, by Thanksgiving Day in the U.S., most farm crop work is done.

Prairie Fare: Consider food gifts for those on your list
“What would you like for Christmas?” I asked my husband as we shopped one evening. “I just need some new undershirts,” my husband replied. He grabbed a package from a rack and handed it to me.

Beef Talk: Prepare for winter meetings by knowing your herd's calving distribution
Although most cows are with calf, reviewing cow herd reproduction dates is important. Typically, 85 percent or more of all cows should be calved within 42 days of the calving season. Calving is a memory for now, but during the many upcoming winter meetings, the number of cows calving within the first 21 days of the calving season or first cycle conception rate will be mentioned often.

Pet Care: Avoid litter box when expecting
Dear Dr. Fox: I am having an ongoing argument with my husband about cleaning out the litter box, which he is now doing because I am pregnant. We have two adopted cats, and they mess the box quickly.

Kovels Antiques: Calling cards way to offer formal greeting
High-society Victorians had a formal way to meet new friends. No playground visits, no social media. The only proper method was an exchange of calling cards, often called “visiting cards.” The system gave the elite a chance to screen newcomers and reject the “unwanted.”

Prairie Fare: Try rosemary to boost flavor, memory
“Mom, something smells heavenly!” my 14-year-old daughter exclaimed. “Wow, what’s for dinner, Mom? When is it time to eat?” my 17-year-old son asked a little while later. “Be patient. You’ll see,” I said.

Hortiscope: Cut your roses back in fall for best results
Q: I have several questions about different plants. I would like to know if I can trim a schefflera plant. I have a nice plant that was given to me for my son’s funeral. The plant sits in my enclosed sunroom by an east window. It is very big, so I’m wondering if I can cut some of it off.

Kovels Antiques: Lamp shape depended on type of fuel
The shape of a lamp once was determined by its power source. A candle required a holder that kept the candle upright, caught drippings and was not damaged if the candle burned too low. Most early candlesticks were made of metal, and many had drip pans and handles so the lit candle could be moved.
