Norval Lien
Norval Lien passed away on December 21, 2012 at Villa Maria nursing home in Fargo.

Norval was born February 5, 1920 near Erie, MN, the son of Nils and Annetta Lien. He grew up in the Cottonwood, MN area, attended rural school and moved with the family to rural Montevideo in 1940. Based at Bergstrom Field at Austin, TX, he served with the US Air Force from 1942-1945. In 1946 he was united in marriage to June Brusven at Cottonwood, MN. In 1958 he was united in marriage to Grace Kelly at Portland, ND, where he was engaged in plumbing and trenching until 1968. From that time until his retirement he lived in Moorhead, MN and was employed by the US Postal Service as a Star Route Mail contractor. In his retirement he enjoyed spending time with friends and family in Wellton, AZ and Montevideo, MN. Among his many interests were gardening, fishing and reading.

M. Joyce Mitzel, 87, Breckenridge, MN, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, MN. The Funeral Service will be Friday, December 28, 11:00 a.m., at Breckenridge Lutheran Church, Breckenridge, MN. There will be visitation Thursday, from 5 PM to 7 PM at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton, at a later date. Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, have been entrusted with the services.

Joyce was born Feb. 8, 1925 in Wahpeton, ND, to Julius and Manda (Grinager) Hudson. Joyce graduated from Wahpeton High School and State School of Science. She was united in marriage to Ivan R. Mitzel on October 21, 1943 and the couple moved to Breckenridge, MN, where they raised their two children. Joyce was homemaker and book keeper for Hudson & Mitzel Contractors. In September of 1965 she started working in the office at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge. She received her administrators' license gradually as she worked up to the positions of office manager, assistant administrator and personnel. Joyce retired from St. Francis in August 1990. After her retirement she spent many years volunteering for St. Francis Auxiliary. Over the years she accumulated over 10,000 hours; 40 years of service as an employee and volunteer at St. Francis Home.

Marlace June Fahrlander
Marlace June Fahrlander passed away peacefully on December 18, 2012 at Walker Methodist Nursing Home in the company of her family. Born February 24, 1926 in Pelican Rapids, MN to Charlie and Manna (Nilson) Drayton, she grew up on a farm near what is now Maplewood State Park and attended grade school in a one-room school house in rural Pelican Rapids. Marlace graduated from Pelican Rapids High School as valedictorian of her class. After graduation, she worked as a bookkeeper in Fergus Falls, MN. While visiting her aunt H.E. in Felton, Marlace met her future husband, Frank Fahrlander, at a dance. They were married on June 11, 1948 in Fergus Falls. They settled in Fargo, ND, where they raised their four children. In addition to caring for her family, Marlace worked as a nurse's aide at St. Luke's Hospital until she was 74 years old. She volunteered with ARC and served on a human rights committee, protecting the interests of people with developmental disabilities. Marlace was a generous, kind-hearted woman with a great sense of humor that endeared her to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by husband, Frank, by her son, Paul, and siblings Emil, Clifford, and Lillian. She is survived by her children Mary, Jill, and John, her grandchildren Damien (Donelle), William, Elizabeth, George, and Henry, great-grandchildren Magdalena and Charlie, and by many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Thurs, Dec. 27 at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, Edina Chapel, 7110 France Ave, Edina MN 55435--visitation at 2:00, service at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to the donor’s favorit

Esther Hovda, age 94, of Valley City, ND, died Wednesday, December 12th at Eventide Hi-Acres Nursing Home in Jamestown, ND. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, December 18th at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home in Valley City and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday morning. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery.

Esther Theresia Price, the daughter of Frank and Leopoldina (Schlegel) Price, was born December 10, 1918 near Fingal, ND. Esther enjoyed working in the fields as a youth, especially working with horses and putting up hay. In the winter, the school bus was an enclosed horse-drawn sleigh. Because they spoke German at home, she had to learn English language skills when she started school. She attended Lucca High School and graduated as valedictorian of a seven person class in 1936. After high school, Esther worked at farms in Jessie and Casselton, and St. John's Hospital in Fargo. She later moved to Valley City where she worked at the Kindred Hotel, Ben Franklin and The Fair Store. Esther also volunteered at the Nearly Nu Store until her late 80's and was a lifelong blood donor. She married James Hovda in 1953 and remained on the farm north of Valley City after James died in 1997. She loved being in the kitchen, logging weather and animal sighting on her database of calendar notes and bible annotations. She was capable of outside work as well, towing son John's stalled pickup a distance of half a mile at the age of 89. Esther and John moved to an apartment in Valley City in 2010. Esther was a deeply religious and was an active and long-time member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Foresters for over 70 years. She was a sweet, gentle and kind lady who was full of optimism and always looked for the best of people with never and unkind word about anyone.
