Kris M. Bjornson
Kris passed away August 24, 2013. He was born on August 18, 1912, on a farm just west of Mountain North Dakota to Magnus and Gudborg Bjornson. There was no electricity or running water, and all farm work was done by horses. He received his primary education in Mountain but transferred to the University high school at the University North Dakota. His mother insisted he continue his education and there was no high school in Mountain so Kris moved to Grand Forks, where he lived with his brother Sig. After graduating from high school he remained at the University North Dakota where he received his bachelors degree in business. To support himself while he was in college, he washed dishes at the Dakota Hotel for $.10 an hour.

Upon graduation, he moved to Forman, North Dakota where he worked as a social worker assisting those who are having difficulty in the midst of the Great Depression. It was here that he met Mildred Tarplee, who is teaching school. They both enjoyed dancing to the big bands of the era and fell in love. They married on June 20, 1942, and were married for 69 years until Mildred's passing in 2011. Kris had tried to enlist in the Army for World War II but was rejected because he had been diagnosed in 1936 with a sarcoma in his forearm. He was one of the first people in North Dakota to receive radiation for cancer and was cured. In 1943, the Army decided that they would take Kris and because his first language was Icelandic, he was drafted into the northern European counterintelligence Corps. After extensive training, he and his other trainees were sent to the Pacific theater in New Guinea. His commanding officer, not knowing what to do with northern European counterintelligence Corps, ordered Kris back to Washington DC where he continued to work in intelligence for the rest of the war. Mildred was also in DC at that time working for the War Department and their first child, Kris of Del Mar, California, was born there in October 1944. With the war over, the family moved back to Fargo, North Dakota where Kris worked in the insurance adjusting business and eventually started his own company, Valley Adjusting. In September of 1947, their daughter, Barbara Kimball of the Mound, Minnesota, was born. In 1972 Kris and Mildred moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota where he bought the Noble Adjustment. They bought a home in San Marcos, CA in the 1980's and traveled between Grand Forks and San Marcos. In his 90s, he then moved to Mound, Minnesota to Presbyterian Homes for their final years. He remained active his entire life and was still walking a mile a day at age 99. A memorial service was celebrated at the Vikur Lutheran Church on September 28 in Mountain, North Dakota. He is preceded in death by his wife Mildred, his sister and 3 brothers. He is survived by his son Kris (Cindi) Bjornson(Del Mar, CA), daughter Barbara (Jack) Kimball(Mound, MN), Granddaughters Andrea Bjornson Lewellen(Seattle, WA), Kami Kimball Nelson(St. Boni), Kristin Kimball Olson(Plymouth, MN), Katherine and Lindsay Bjornso
