Forum editorial: Focus on kid fitness wins roses
PRAIRIE ROSES: To health care and physical education professionals who are stressing that children who are inactive are turning into “Generation Fluffy” (see Forum, Page 1, Dec. 11). Among them are Heather Arntson, head of Moorhead High School’s physical education department, and Joe Deutsch, associate professor of physical education teacher education at North Dakota State University, and a member of the Fargo Park Board. They and others are re-emphasizing the warning that children who don’t get enough exercise are at risk of health problems later in life. Many of them are overweight already, so are beginning life with a burden that could cause them harm as they mature. A big part of the problem is a sedentary lifestyle tied to video games, lack of outdoor experiences, poor diet and parents who are all too willing to excuse their kids from gym classes. It’s a good thing that educators who work with physically unfit children all day are sounding the alarm.
