Gary John Burnside was born on August 7, 1941, to John and Opal (Reidberger) Burnside near Hitterdal. He attended school in Hitterdal and as a young man was employed by several farmers in the area. On May 21, 1966, Gary was united in marriage to Donna Sather. The couple made their home in Moorhead, MN, before moving to their current residence near Hawley.

Virginia was born January 9, 1947 at Grand Forks, North Dakota, the daughter of Joseph and Louise (Dalbey) Triskle. She was raised and educated at Grand Forks and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1965. She attended nursing school in Crookston, MN and graduated with an LPN degree in 1967.
