Shirley Jacobs
Shirley Jacobs, 87, formerly of Hazen, Bismarck and West Fargo, ND, passed away September 19, 2013, in Dubuque, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Martin Catholic Church in Hazen on Friday, Oct. 4 at 10:00 am Central time, with a rosary on Thursday evening at 7:00 at the church.

Shirley Ann Magdalene Retterath was born March 7, 1926 in Hazen, ND, to Norbert and Freda (Schmidt) Retterath, the eldest of six children. She grew up on the family farm, attending Pleasant Valley Country School and, for a year, Catholic boarding school in Garrison, ND. Winters were long and travel to town was difficult, so she and her sister Betty rented a room in Hazen until Shirley graduated from Hazen High School in 1943. Shirley attended St. Alexius School of Nursing until her high school sweetheart, Richard Jacobs, serving in the south Pacific in WWII, proposed to and sent her an engagement ring by mail. They were married on May 1, 1946. Shirley and Dick began their married life in Hazen, where their two daughters, Angele and Vicki, were born, then moved to Bismarck in 1951, where their sons, Richard and John, were born. Shirley worked as a nurse from 1963 until 1967, when the family followed Dick's job to West Fargo. In 2008 Shirley and Dick moved to Iowa to live with their daughter Vicki.
