Frances V. Nelson
Frances V. Nelson, 94 of Fargo, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo.

Frances was born on September 30, 1918 in Upham, ND to Hans and Mary (Austin) Holen. She grew up and attended school in Grafton, ND. On September 10, 1941 she married Manard Nelson. She spent 3 years living in Minneapolis during World War II while Manard was in the service. They lived in the Grafton-Hoople area for many years before moving to West Fargo in 1954. Frances was an active member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in West Fargo and was known there as one of the “3 musketeers”.

Roger Kerns
Roger Kerns died Thursday, August 29th in Sanford Health Palliative Care Unit. He was born April 16, 1933, in Brookings, SD. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from South Dakota State University and a doctorate from the University of South Dakota.

He was founder of Special Olympics in South Dakota in 1968. He also started Camp Happiness on the banks of the Missouri River in Vermillion, SD for exceptional children which provided recreation, fun and happiness for those children who found it hard to fit in other camping situations. He moved his family to Fargo and NDSU in 1971. In 1972, he enlisted the help of some of his students at the college and organized the first Special Olympics in North Dakota. And in all of those years, he was a member of the Army National Guard in South Dakota obtaining the rank of colonel.

Curtis Delene Mehlhoff
Curtis Delene Mehlhoff, 80, died peacefully on August 29, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 1:00 pm at Faith Lutheran Church in Bismarck. Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 1 at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison from 2 to 7 pm and Monday, Sept. 2 at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck from 2 to 5 pm. A private burial will take place at Garrison Cemetery.

Curt was born on Feb. 13, 1933 to Jacob and Amelia (Bauch) Mehlhoff in rural Coleharbor, ND. He graduated from Garrison High School in 1951. After working for a short time at the Ford plant in Minneapolis, he returned to the Garrison area and started farming. For several years he sold vehicles during the winter months for Schaeffer Ford of Underwood, ND. Curt married Lois Walters on Oct. 22, 1955 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison. Curt and Lois were blessed with four daughters; Cynthia, Susan, Lisa, and Jody. Lois died on July 7, 1988. Curt retired from farming in 1989 and later moved to Bismarck.
