Alice E. Braniff
Alice Eleanor Braniff passed away on her 89th birthday, March 8, 2014. Alice Nelson was born to John Marius Nelson and Bessie (Bjorge) Nelson on the family farm in Nelson County, North Dakota in 1925. She graduated from Lakota High School in 1943 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from the University of North Dakota. After graduation she went on to work at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis, and the Columbus Hospital in Great Falls. She was united in marriage on August 11, 1956 to Donald Braniff at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Doyon, ND. The couple raised four children and made their home in Moorhead.

Alice was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, since 1957 and volunteered there for over 30 years. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed golfing well into her 80s, recording two holes-in-one along the way. Even at 70+ years old she could play 27 holes, walking the first 18 and taking a cart for the last nine. She also volunteered countless hours at the Ponderosa Golf Course.

Erma L. Strege (nee Hendrickson)
Erma L. Strege (nee Hendrickson), formerly of Fargo, died March 2 in Princeton, MN. Born May 9, 1929, in Roseau, MN. She moved to Grand Forks in 1948 where she met and married Wayne Strege. Following 2 years with the military service in Alabama, they moved to Fargo, where they raised 3 children. Erma was active in her church and served as the church secretary for many years. She worked for the FAA for 21 years. Following retirement, she enjoyed traveling to and with her children, and when in Fargo, was always busy volunteering in the community, at MeritCare, and with the elderly.

Husband Wayne, her parents, two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Mark (Cheryl), Hill City, SD; Jan (Tim) Takata, Zimmerman, MN; Paul, Glendale, AZ; 3 granddaughters, Lindsay, Jessica and Jenna, 4 great-grandchildren, brother Carroll, brother-in-law Loren, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Dorothy A. Hinz
Dorothy A. Hinz, 85 of West Fargo, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at ManorCare in Fargo.

Dorothy was born on February 16, 1929 in Mapleton, ND to Lester and Nellie (Bumgarner) Pyle. She graduated from high school in Mapleton in 1947. Dorothy married Marvin H. Hinz on October 23, 1948 and they resided in Mapleton for several years. Marvin and Dorothy owned and operated Spruce Hill Campground near Park Rapids, MN for ten years. They retired on Long Lake near Park Rapids in 1986 and moved to West Fargo in 2004. Dorothy especially enjoyed gardening and flowers of all kinds.

Lloyd A. Svendsbye
Svendsbye, Lloyd A. age 83 of Hamlet, ND, passed away on March 2, 2014 at the Colony in Eden Prairie, where he resided for the past 3 years. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anne; parents, Anders and Gudrun Svendsbye; sisters, Alice Vatne, Margaret Vatne, Lillian Nelson, Gladys Berg; brother, Albert Svendsbye. Survived by brother, Edward Svendsbye; sisters, Adeline Elverud, Jean Brusven; nieces, nephews and many friends. Lloyd was a 1951 graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Following college he went on to Luther Seminary and was ordained a Lutheran Minister in 1955. He received his Doctorate of Divinity from Columbia University in New York. He taught religion at Concordia and was department chair. Throughout his career Lloyd served as President of Augsburg Publishing House, Mpls, MN, Vice President of American Lutheran Church, Mpls, MN, President of Luther/Northwestern Seminary, St. Paul, MN, Vice President and Dean of the Faculty at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and President of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD. Following Lloyd’s retirement he served on the Board of Directors for various institutions. Throughout his life Lloyd was very proud of his Norwegian heritage, participating in Mindekirken, Torske Klubben and Norway House. Lloyd was also extremely proud that he had a personal audience with Pope John Paul II and hosted such dignitaries as King Olaf of Norway and President Gorbachev. Even though Lloyd had a very successful professional career he took great pleasure in being a very simple North Dakota farm boy. Visitation 5-7 PM Thursday, March 13, Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, W. 50th St and Vernon Ave at Hwy 100, Edina. Funeral service 11 AM Friday, March 14 with visitation beginning at 10 AM at Normandale Lutheran Church, 6100 Normandale Road, Edina. Interment Lakewood Cemetery. Alta Brokke
Alta Brokke, age 98, died Friday March 7, 2014 at Manor Care in Fargo.

Alta Bernice Rodella Thompson was born on May 25, 1915 to Anton & Bessie (Johnson) Thompson on a farm located between Nielsville, MN and Cummings, ND. She worked the fields with her father and with neighbors of Bingham Township, ND. On November 30, 1939, Alta was married to Harry Brokke. Together they owned and operated the Corner Café in Climax, MN until 1944 when they moved to Grand Forks, ND and began operating Brokke Grocery, a small neighborhood grocery store on Cottonwood Street. In 1961, they sold the grocery store and purchased the Travalon Motel located on Hwy 10 between Moorhead and Dilworth, MN. They operated the Travalon until 1975, when Harry passed away.

Betty Jensen
Betty Jensen, 87, went peacefully home to her waiting savior on Wednesday, March 5, 2014. She was with family and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

She was born on November 9, 1926 in Breckenridge, MN to Howard and Frances (Needham) Wheeler. As she grew up, she attended school in Grand Forks and Fargo, graduating from Fargo Central High School in 1944. On December 29, 1945 she married her sweetheart, Lee Jensen and she said it was the happiest day of her life.

Laverne Staples, 92, of Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Cavalier, ND passed away Monday, March 3, 2014 at Woodside Village in Grand Forks. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 14, 2014 at 10:30a.m. at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church in Cavalier. A visitation will be held Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. with a 7:00p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier. Burial will be held in the Cavalier Cemetery.

Cecil Laverne Staples was born May 17, 1921 at Hamilton, ND to Cecil and Alvina (Hudson) Staples. He grew up in Hamilton and attended school there until the eighth grade, then graduating from Park River Ag School. On November 5, 1943, Laverne married Doris Gelder in Bathgate, ND. After their marriage, they moved to Chicago, IL, and then back to Hamilton where Laverne owned Staples Cash Service. He worked at Irwin Motors and then managed Wilson Brothers Parts Store where he eventually retired. Some of his hobbies include fishing, hunting, carpentry, attending flea markets and auction sales. Laverne won many ribbons at the Pembina County Fair for his gardening. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to him. Laverne became a member of the Masonic Lodge in 1948 and has been a lifelong member.

James A. Halstenson, age 76, of rural Niagara, ND, passed away Friday, March 7, 2014 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

James A. Halstenson was born June 18, 1937 at rural Niagara, the son of Hilman and Mildred Halstenson. He married Marcy Krueger on July 30, 1955. Jim took over the family farm at the age of 14. He also taught music at Langdon, Fordville, and spent most of his career at Unity in Petersburg, ND.

Blair E. Thielke, 51, Lisbon, ND, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014, unexpectedly at his residence. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, March 11, 5:30 PM at Willow Creek Chapel, Wahpeton, ND, with Rev. Morris Stephens officiating. There will be visitation from 4 PM up until the time of the service on Tuesday. Arrangements have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Blair was born October 22, 1962, at Fergus Falls, MN, the son of Harlan and Darlene (Johnson) Thielke. He grew up in Wahpeton attending public schools and graduating from Wahpeton High School in 1981. He attended NDSCS in Wahpeton, where he was enrolled in Tool and Die Making. Blair worked for Ro-Banks Manufacturing in Wahpeton for ten years. In 1993 he started employment with Bobcat in Gwinner, ND and lived in Lisbon.
