Dean W. Hall
Dean W. Hall was born Feb 9, 1931 in Rawson, ND the son of Waldo and Bessie Hall. He graduated from Alexander HS in 1949. He received a BS from Valley City State, followed by a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley. He worked as a teacher in Finley, Alexander and Rolla, ND before becoming a middle school principal in Stanley, ND, in 1958.

While in Stanley, Dean met his wife Joan Lindbo when she was employed as a teacher. They were married on Aug. 9, 1959, in Rolla. In 1967, they moved to West Fargo where he was the principal of South Elementary for the next 25 years. Dean’s passion was education. He was active in the Elementary Principals Association and received numerous awards during his career. He felt that happy children and adults provided an environment that optimized learning, thus creating the South school family.

Donald Spiekermeier
Donald Spiekermeier, 86, Sheldon, passed away February 28, 2013 at Sanford Health, Fargo ND. Donald Lawrence Spiekermeier was born February 15, 1927 to John and Bessie Spiekermeier at Sheldon, North Dakota. He grew up in Sheldon and graduated there. He farmed for many years and also worked various other jobs throughout his life. Donnie had been at the Good Samaritan Center in Arthur since 2006, where he enjoyed his time with fellow residents and the staff. Donald is survived by his three children, Lynn (Jan) Spiekermeier, Colorado, Paula (Dan) Aspelund, Minnesota, and David (Pauline) Spiekermeier, Iowa, along with 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He also leaves brothers Jack (Marlyss), Roy, (Anna Mae), and sister Mary (Pat) Boyle. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, March 4 at St. Mary’s, Sheldon, ND. Interment will be in St Mary’s Cemetery, Sh

Hazel Haarstad
Hazel Haarstad died on February 27, 2013 peacefully at her home surrounded by family. Hazel was born March 3, 1934 in Moorhead. She was the daughter of Ovean and Hazel Hite. Hazel was raised in rural Glyndon and attended school at a one-room school (#22 west) and at Averill, graduating from Glyndon High School. During that time she was active in her local 4H.

Hazel married Jim Haarstad on November 9, 1952. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Hazel was active in community activities including serving as president of Moorhead Mrs. Jaycees and teaching Sunday school and bible school at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. She worked as a paraprofessional for the Harbor School of Moorhead and for the Moorhead School System for 25 years. After she retired she became actively involved in Zion Lutheran Church on Franklin Lake where she spent many Tuesdays working with the quilters. She was also active in PEO and became a recent volunteer with Hospice of Red River Valley. Jim and Hazel spent many wonderful years enjoying their lake homes, first on Little Cormorant Lake and later on Pelican Lake, as well as their condo in Arizona. Hazel and Jim enjoyed their many frequent travels and visiting with family and friends.

Forman, ND: Cecelia “Toots” Marion (Harles) Sundquist was born October 15, 1923, to Michael and Anna Harles in Rutland Township, Sargent County. Toots grew up in the Rutland Township and attended Rutland Consolidated School. During WWII Toots worked at the Waldorf Paper Factory in St. Paul. She returned to the Rutland area and was a waitress for several years in the Rutland and Forman areas.

On December 27, 1951, she was united in marriage to Morris Sundquist in Cogswell, ND. They moved to Bowmen Township where they lived for a short time before moving to a farmstead in Dunbar Township. There they farmed, raised cattle, chickens and pigs. Toots was a stay at home mom to their three boys. She was a hard worker and anyone who knew her saw this in her hands.
