Lawrence Hawley Fowler, Jr. was born April 30, 1929 in Oak Park, Illinois to Lawrence and Eloise (Taylor) Fowler. He graduated from high school in 1946 at Elmhurst, Illinois, and graduated from college in 1950 at Grinell, Iowa. His family moved from Elmhurst to Mankato, MN in the summer of 1946.
