Locked-out American Crystal workers vote to approve contract
MOORHEAD – American Crystal Sugar Co. workers locked out of their jobs since Aug. 1, 2011, are heading back to work, but it’s a bittersweet resolution for the union. Fifty-five percent of union members voted to ratify the contract Saturday, their fifth vote during the labor dispute.

Gale “Scott” Burley
Gale “Scott” Burley, 70, West Fargo, ND died on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Sanford Health, Fargo.

Gale Benedict Burley was born Aug. 17, 1942 in Fargo, ND to Gale R. and Barbara (Lisburg) Burley. He grew up on the family farm near Gardner, ND and graduated from Gardner High School. He served four years in the National Guard. On May 12, 1967, he married Kathy Parkhouse in Hillsboro, ND. They made their home in Hillsboro until 1970 when they moved to Gardner. He worked at the Farmers Union Oil in Gardner and Grandin Mfg in Grandin, ND. Scott later served as custodian and bus driver at Cass Valley North School in Grandin. In 1990, they moved to West Fargo. He worked in the meat department at the Northport Hornbachers for 19 years until retiring in 2011.

Norma Inez Rye
Norma Inez Rye, 97, of Moorhead, MN formerly of Mayville ND, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at home in Moorhead.

Norma (Renden) was born February 28, 1916 to Nels and Inga (Wolden) Renden at rural Blanchard, ND. She was baptized, confirmed and attended schools in the Blanchard and Mayville communities. She married William Rye on August 20, 1936 at Hillsboro, ND. The couple settled in Libertyville, IL where they operated the New Castle Hotel and Apts. Later they purchased the Renden farm at Blanchard where they farmed until retirement. In 1976 they purchased a home in Mayville. Norma worked 12 years as a dietetic supervisor at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville.

Doris (Grindberg) Johnson, 81, of Fargo, ND died Monday March 25th, 2013 at Sanford Hospital, Fargo.

Doris was born on Jan 11th, 1932 in Mapleton, the daughter of Leona and Carl Grindberg. She attended and graduated High School in Mapleton, ND. Doris attended college at Medical Technology and graduated as a medicine technician. Doris married Marvin Johnson on Oct 5th, 1951 in Minneapolis; they were married for 49 years. Doris will be remembered for her work in church, her wonderful cooking, love of family, hunting enthusiasm, and being a devout Minnesota Viking and Twins fan.

Leland Johnson
Leland Matthew Johnson, 85, Hillsboro, ND and Mesa, AZ passed away March 7, 2013 in Mesa after a short battle with cancer.

Leland was born January 4, 1928 in Red Wing, MN the son of Fred and Laura Johnson. He attended various schools in ND graduating from Forman High School in 1947. He studied auto mechanics at the State School of Science in Wahpeton. He moved to central North Dakota where he worked on the Garrison Dam. It was during this time that his daughter Patricia was born. They returned to Forman where he operated a Mobil bulk oil gas truck.

Dagny Svaleson
Dagny passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Hillsboro Medical Center Nursing Home at the age of 83.

Dagny Forde was born on June 10, 1929, the daughter of Samuel and Hedvig (Clemenson) Forde in Hillsboro. She grew up in Hillsboro and received her education. Dagny was baptized, confirmed, and married at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro - a lifelong member. She was united in marriage to Alvin Svaleson on June 3, 1949 and they made their home in Hillsboro where they raised their family. Dagny loved the time she spent at the Hillsboro Day Care where she served as a foster grandparent. She also was a charter member of the Hillsboro VFW Auxiliary.
