William L. Mathers
William Leroy Mathers, age 89, died Saturday, June 15, in Fargo, ND, surrounded by his daughters. Bill was born September 29, 1923, in Mobeetie, TX, to Violet Rees Mathers and George Benjamin Mathers. He was raised in Canadian, Texas, where he graduated from Canadian High School in 1940. He graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute in 1942 and attended the University Of Texas School Of Law. In January of 1943, he entered the U.S. Army. He served as a ball turret gunner on a B24 crew with the 737th Bomb Squadron in the 454th Bomber Group of the 15th Army Air Corps. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945.
He married Mary Charlotte Word on June 16, 1946. Following their marriage, they ranched in Canadian, TX. In 1951, Bill and his family moved to Miles City, MT, where he and his brother Frank operated the Mathers Brothers Ranch, which later became the Mathers Land Company. Frank and his wife, Betty, died in a plane crash in 1979. Bill continued the ranching operation until 2005, when he sold the ranch and retired. In January 2012, he moved to the Touchmark retirement community in Fargo, ND.

Duane Wallace Lidstrom, son of Knute and Elna (Modey) Lidstrom, was born in the village of Richwood on March 2, 1914. He grew up in Richwood, graduated from the eighth grade there, was a 1931 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School, and received a Bachelor of Education degree from Superior Wisconsin State College in 1936. After teaching for one year at Central High School in Superior, Wisconsin, he resigned to continue his education of the University of Minnesota where he earned a Master’s Degree in History in 1938.

Gladys Caroline (Gronbeck) Walaker of Leonard, ND passed away on June 13, 2013. She was born on January 13, 1920 to Arne and Josephine (Vangsness) Gronbeck. Gladys grew up on the family farm south of Leonard. On September 4, 1938 she married Ray E. Walaker at the home of her grandmother Elizabeth Vangsness in Sheldon, ND.
Gladys and Ray settled in Leonard where they raised three sons: Dennis, Wallace, Ray Jr., and daughter, Renae. At first, Ray and Gladys ran a cream station, purchasing cream and eggs from the farmers, and transporting them to Fairmont Creamery in Moorhead. Later, they ran a Standard Oil Bulk fuel business along with a small service station. Gladys frequently ran the station while Ray delivered fuel to farms in the area.

John W. “Pete” Markey, age 85, of Fargo, passed away at Rosewood on Broadway on Tuesday, June 11, 2013.
Pete joined the love of his life, June Beverly Gronland, on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, having been married to June for 57 years. They were wed on August 22, 1949 at First Lutheran Church in Fargo. John was born to Frank and Ruth (Satter) Markey on November 5, 1927, at Casselton, ND. He grew up in Casselton and attended school there until moving to Fargo with his family where he attended Fargo Central High. Pete enlisted in the Navy and served during World War Two. He was an officer/member of Messiah Lutheran Church for many years, cooked at the Wild Game Feed, the Mother-Daughter Banquets and numerous church events. He served on the Fargo City Commission from 1958 until 1974. He joined Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and worked there for 38 years until retiring. Over the years Pete was a Boy Scout leader for 12 years, a former president of the Communications Workers of America Local 7303, President of the Fargo Blazers Hockey Club, and a member of Teamster Local 116, Fargo American Legion Post 7, Life member Casselton VFW Post 4655, and Telephone Pioneers of America.
