Orland K. Engebretson
Orland K. Engebretson, 81, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Ecumen –Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Orland was born on March 20, 1932, the son of Ener and Anna (Huseby) Engebretson in Scambler Township, rural Otter Tail County, Minnesota. He was raised and educated in Pelican Rapids, graduating from high school in 1950. During his high school years, he excelled in baseball, basketball and football. As a young man, Orland enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving during the Korean War. Orland was united in marriage to Marlys Herfindahl on September 3, 1955 at Lake Park Lutheran Church, Lake Park, Minnesota. Upon his return from the Korean War, Orland began his education at NDSU and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. Orland and Marlys moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he work for the city of Milwaukee. After two years, they moved to Detroit Lakes and he worked for Harvey W. Nelson Construction in Lake Park for nine years. Orland and Marlys then moved to Moorhead, where he went to work for Abbott/Arne/Schwindt Incorporated for thirty-five years, retiring in 2002. After his retirement, they made their home in Detroit Lakes.

Marjorie Maxwell Hammer
Marjorie Maxwell Hammer, 95, passed away at the Good Samaritan-Woodland Nursing Home in Brainerd, MN on May 7, 2013.

She was born in Devils Lake, ND on April 11, 1918, and attended schools in Ft, Totten, ND, Tuba City, AZ, and Belcourt, ND, before graduating in 1936 from Rolla, ND High School. Marjorie then attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, graduating in 1941 with a degree of Bachelor of Arts. She taught in elementary schools in Belcourt, ND and Hansboro, ND, before moving to Minneapolis, where she met and married her husband, O. J. Hammer. He passed away in 1960.

Letter: North Dakota lawmakers gut good oil well setback measure
Just because a legislator says it doesn’t make it so. Shortly after the North Dakota House passed a very weak setback bill, HB 1348, Rep. Todd Porter, R-Mandan, said in a KX News story, “I believe it’s not only landmark but it’s going to be the benchmark for other states as they move forward with oil exploration and production.”
