Ronald Burton Fasteen
Ronald Burton Fasteen age 83, of Detroit Lakes Minnesota passed away in his sleep on April 30, 2013. Ron was born on July 21, 1929 to Milton and Agnes Fasteen in Virginia MN. Ron moved to Detroit Lakes Minnesota shortly following his graduation from Virginia High School were he met his future wife Helen Mae Wolff of Waubun, MN. Ron and Helen were married on April 22, 1951 before his enlistment in the United States Army in 1953.
Ron served with the United States Army during the Korean War where learned his trade in the correspondence business. Following his discharge from the military, Ron, Helen, and son Bruce returned to the Detroit Lakes area where he began his 47+ year career with the Detroit Lakes newspaper.

Elizabeth A. Piper
Elizabeth passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead at the age of 102.
Elizabeth Anna Lindner was born on April 19, 1911, the daughter of Mathias and Amelia (Ponzer) Lindner in Becker County, MN. She grew up in this area, moving into Frazee, MN where she was a child. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Theodore Piper Sr. on November 6, 1929. They lived near Durbin, ND, where they raised their family and farmed for many years. Theodore passed away in March of 1976. She moved to Lynchburg, ND, and later to Casselton, ND, before making her home at Eventide for the last two years.

Ray attended rural grade schools and graduated from high school in Havana, ND in 1939. He farmed and raised livestock with his father and brother, Emil for many years. Later in life, he and Emil partnered with his nephews, Lowell and Bob.

Lawrence A. Tweed, 89, of Tolna, ND passed away April 25, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. He was surrounded by his loved ones.
Lawrence was born in McVille, ND on April 30, 1923 to Joseph and Marie (Gudmundson) Tweed, and grew up on a farm near Tolna, ND. He attended high school at Oak Grove in Fargo ND. Then, he worked in the Fargo area and continued to help out on the family farm. Lawrence started farming independently in the Hamar area and in 1947 married Shirley Jurgenson. They were gifted with 50 wonderful years of marriage. Lawrence had a love for traveling and the outdoors. He was very involved in his church, community and county.

Philip Hetland
Philip Hetland, 88, of Moorhead, MN, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, driving his car near his home of one year, Farmstead Estates. The hard snow was a blessing in stopping the car without incident.
Phil was born June 14, 1924, near Hetland, SD (Kingsbury County), to Carl and Gudrid (Vigesaa) Hetland, moving to a farm near Cooperstown, ND, with his family at age 3. He attended country school, then Cooperstown High School, graduating in 1943. He joined the U. S. Navy and was in the field of electronics, stationed at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC, when WWII ended. He then attended Concordia College, graduating in 1949. On October 5, 1951, he married Lorraine Brodshaug at Horace, ND. They lived in Underwood, ND, for four years where Phil taught science, math and music and was principal. He directed a church choir there. They moved to Bottineau, ND, in 1955 where Phil had all the high school choirs and band. Great school talent resulted in award-winning groups. In 1956, Phil was offered the Engineering Dept. one-year opening at the then School of Forestry, teaching all the classes. He was coach of the baseball team and was named coach of the year. That year he also directed the Bottineau Community Choir. In 1957, Phil was offered a position in the Physics Dept. at then NDAC. He retired as Professor in 1986. While at NDSU, he was involved in many of the Christian youth groups on campus. He also earned a master's degree in his first years there.
