John "Jack" Anderson, 86, Fargo, ND, formerly Wahpeton, ND, passed away Friday, October 11, 2013 at the VA Medical Center, Fargo. The Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church, Wahpeton. Visitation will be Tuesday, at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, from 5 PM to 7 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Vigil, also visitation will be one hour before the service at the church with a Knights of Columbus rosary said at 9:30 AM on Wednesday. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wahpeton.

Jack was born November 17, 1926, at Wahpeton, ND, the son of Elmer A. and Anna E. (McInnis) Anderson. He attended schools in Wahpeton, graduating from Wahpeton High School in 1944. He served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 where he served on the USS California and USS Cleveland in Okinawa and the Philippines. After his honorable discharge he returned to the area where he married Mary Ann Althoff on May 1, 1950 at St. Phillips Catholic Church, Hankinson, ND. The couple lived in Wahpeton where they raised their family. Jack worked at Lillegards Chevrolet for several years and for 22 years at Globe Gazette in Wahpeton before working for 3 M in Wahpeton, where he retired from.

Elsie was born near Sabin, MN on December 11, 1921 to John and Erna (Rose) Paasch. She grew up and attended schools in that area. She was baptized and confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church in Sabin. She graduated from Moorhead High School in 1941 and was employed in Fargo, ND for a number of years before being married to Clarence Amundsen in a double wedding ceremony in Grace Lutheran Church in Fargo. Her sister Stella was the other bride.

Naomi Walberg
Naomi passed away on October 4, 2013 at her home in Fargo at the age of 76.

Naomi Frad Walberg was born on May 21, 1937 in Perley, MN. She grew up on a farm near Horace and attended school in Horace. She was united in marriage to Duane Walberg on October 28, 1955 in Horace. Naomi worked for many years at St. John’s Hospital in Fargo until its closing, and then for Dr. Lindeman. She also worked at Rosewood on Broadway Nursing Home and at Essentia Hospital as a sitter until the time of her death. Duane and Naomi made their home in Horace the majority of the life. Duane passed away in March of 2010. Naomi continued to live in Horace until 2012 when she moved into Fargo.

Mildred F. Smaaland, age 82, resident of Aneta, ND, died peacefully at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, on Friday, October 4, 2013 under the care of Altru Hospice.

Mildred Frances Olson was born May 29, 1931 at the McVille Hospital to Oscar and Thelma (Trostad) Olson of Kloten. She grew up on a farm near Kloten. Mildred attended school in Kloten, graduating in 1949 as valedictorian of her class. She then attended Mayville Teachers College. She taught in rural schools, was branch manager for Fuller Brush Company, waitress, nurses aide, and homemaker & home health aide for Nelson County Social Services for 20 years. Mildred married Maynard Smaaland on December 27, 1951 at Kloten. They lived in and near Aneta. Milly was a very loving person. She left a legacy of love, friendship, and hospitality. She loved life, bingo, and playing cards. She will be greatly missed by her children, family, and friends.

Arliene May was born May 16, 1934 at Fairmount, ND, the daughter of Arnold & Clara (Crooks) Moeller. She grew up on a farm near Fairmount and in 1941 they moved to Lidgerwood, ND where she attended Lidgerwood Public School. On February 1, 1950 she was united in marriage to Arnold Mattson at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood. Arliene worked several jobs, including Mattson’s Café, Popp Plastic Binding Co., a teacher’s aide at Lidgerwood Public School, Dakota Magic Casino & many years at the Lidgerwood Bakery.

Roberta Marie Greenheck was born March 5, 1921 at McHenry, ND to Hubert and Elizabeth (Zanzinger) Greenheck. She grew up at Wahpeton, ND and graduated from high school in 1939. She married Houston Heflin in Wahpeton. They made their home in West Fargo in 1940 where they raised their family. Roberta was active in the Blessed Sacrament Parish for many years. She was the family matriarch and loved gardening, playing cards and crossword puzzles. She entered ManorCare in 2005.

Gordon Carlyle Luick was born in rural Richland County on November 2, 1919 to Arthur W. and Christine (Lien) Luick. He was the second of six children: Donald (1918); Gordon (1919); Dale (1922); Helen (1923); LaVern (1925); and Artie (1932). He attended grade school at LaMars #1, and graduated from Fairmount Public School. Gordon took classes at North Dakota State College of Science in welding, engine overhaul, and electric motor repair.

John often spoke of how he would attend Sunday Mass with Grandpa Earl and Grandma, after which the family would breakfast at The Pantry or Phillipe's and then spend the afternoon driving around L.A., looking at land.

Charles A. (Chuck) Schneider, 71, rural Hawley, MN, died on September 20, 2013, in Avon, Colorado.

Chuck was born on March 24, 1942, in Breckenridge, MN, to Edwin and Dorothy (Fletcher) Schneider. He grew up and attended school there, graduating from Breckenridge High School in 1960. Timothy Mark Mayo was born September 6, 1955 in Sidney, MT to Gail and Beverly (Niehenke) Vitt. When Tim was two years old, his father, Gail passed away. Beverly married John “Jack” Mayo in 1962, at which time Jack adopted Tim and his three siblings.

They moved to Cavalier, ND, where Tim attended school and graduated from Cavalier High School in 1974. He attended NDSU Bottineau for two years, where he was captain of the basketball team. He transferred to NDSU in Fargo earning a B.S. Degree in Construction Management. In 1978, Tim and his brothers, Greg and Joe, began Mayo Construction Company, carrying on a third generation of road construction.

She was extremely giving and caring. Anita always thought about others before herself. She worked in the mortgage and loan industry with her most recent job being at TRN Title & Abstract.

Dale Jerome Rettig, 60, Fargo, ND died Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Sanford Health Palliative Care, Fargo.

Dale Rettig was born June 2, 1953 in Hankinson, ND to Barney and Marvale (Gereszek) Rettig. He grew up in Fairmount, ND. He enjoyed visiting his grandparents farm surrounded by animals and the freedom of the outdoor space. He entered the Grafton State School in 1964. He lived there until 1979 when he moved to Wahpeton for a short time. He returned to Grafton, later he lived in Grand Forks, ND before returning to Grafton once again. He moved to Fargo in 1982 and lived at the Svee Home. In 1984 Dale was able to live on his own under the guidance of Community Living Services. Dale married Judy Anderson in Fargo on June 14, 1991. The couple lived in Fargo until Judy’s death in 1993.
