William D. Day
William Daniel Day, 88, Fargo, formerly of New Rockford, ND passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Eventide Nursing Home, Moorhead.

William Day was born April 5, 1925 in New Rockford, ND to Warren and Elizabeth (O’Keefe) Day. He grew up and attended St. James Academy in New Rockford. William enlisted in the Army in 1943 serving in North Africa and Italy. He was honorably discharged and returned to New Rockford and then moved to Fargo. He attended NDSU where he received degrees in Math and Ag Economics. He was recalled into the Army where he served in Fort Collins, CO before being transferred to Fort Benning. While in Fort Benning he trained soldiers for Korea. William D. Day and Anna Mae Helms were married September 6, 1948 in New Rockford. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1952 and taught for a time in Ashley. William joined Great American Insurance, now American Financial, in 1952. He retired in 1990.

Stephen David Haupt
Stephen David Haupt, 83, passed away April 3, 2013 in his home in Manassas, Virginia.

He was born in the family home in Stephen, Minnesota and was the seventh child of Louis and Amanda Haupt. He grew up and attended school in Stephen, graduating in 1948. In 1949 he joined the Navy, and retired after 20 years of active duty as a Chief Petty Officer. In 1971 he began a second career as a civilian at the Pentagon, retiring as a Computer Specialist in 1986.

Tom A. Oliver, 86, of Dilworth, MN, died Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo, ND.

Tom Antonio Oliver was born March 23, 1927, in Dilworth, the son of Frank and Dominica (Perzichelli) Oliver. He was raised there and attended school before entering the U.S. Navy in 1945. He served until 1946 and upon his discharge returned to Dilworth.

Dean M. Olson, 60, of Lake Park, MN, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, at his home.

Dean was born May 6, 1952 in Detroit Lakes, MN, to Ardean and Eleen (Rosman) Olson. He grew up and attended school in Lake Park, MN, graduating from Lake Park High School in 1970. He then attended Moorhead Technical College and received a degree in electronics. Both during and after High School he worked for his Dad as a heavy equipment operator. On August 4, 1973 he married Benita (Pollock) in Ulen, MN. Dean then worked for Cenex and American Crystal Sugar before settling in to his career as Director of Television Services at Concordia College in 1979. Dean worked for Concordia until his retirement in March of 2012. Dean enjoyed electronics, photography, airplanes, air shows and spending time playing with his grandchildren. His positive outlook and humor will be greatly missed.

Richard "Dick" Mansfield Smith
Richard "Dick" Mansfield Smith was born September 8, 1921 in Esmond, ND, near Leeds, to Mansfield Sherman and Mary Lucille (Hawkland) Smith. He passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013 at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge, MN. Visitation will be Friday, April 5 from 4-7 pm at St. John's Catholic Church with a prayer service at 7 pm. A Catholic funeral will be celebrated at 2:30 pm on Saturday, April 6, at St. John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton. Interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Breckenridge, MN at a later date. Attendees are encouraged to wear bright colors rather than customary black. In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family asks well-wishers to donate to a charity of their choosing or to assist someone in need.

Richard's family moved several times before settling in Breckenridge, MN in 1937, where Richard played football, baseball and basketball, graduating in 1939. He was a member of the 1939 Cowboy's basketball team which played in the Minnesota state tournament. He enrolled at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN that fall, where he was a member of the football and baseball teams. Richard enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the onset of World War II in December 1941. He captained a B-17 Bomber, "Destiny's Tot", completing 13 missions before his plane was shot down over France in December 1943. He escaped the damaged plane via parachute and the Nazis via the French Resistance to return to Allied territory by January 1944.
