Charles L. Eldredge Sr.
Charles L. Eldredge Sr., 78, of Luck, Wis., passed away peacefully on February 4, 2014. He was born and raised in St. Paul and graduated from St. Luke's Catholic elementary and Cretin High School. He met Marion Lyness while they were students at the Colleges of St. Thomas and St. Catherine. The couple married in 1958 in Fessenden and, upon completion of his National Guard assignment, made their home in St. Paul. He was employed by the 3M Company for 16 years in animal care and home product development. In 1975, the couple and their children relocated to Marion's hometown of Fessenden, N.D. They farmed before buying the Fessenden Free Press and Harvey Herald, later combined to the Herald-Press, in 1983. Charlie continued to be active in the business, well into his retirement. He and Marion have enjoyed living permanently at their home on Blake Lake, Wis., since 2001.

In 1993, Charlie obtained his Masters of Theological Studies degree from the University of Dallas. He was an active member, song leader and trustee of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Fessenden. He performed in many community theater productions. He served as president of the North Dakota Newspaper Association and served in leadership roles with the Harvey and Fessenden Kiwanis clubs, Prairie Toastmasters, Top Hat Playhouse board, St. Aloisius Medical Center board, Economic Development board, Fessenden Group Home, Limited and the 4th Corporation. He served on the Fargo Diocese board of education and was editor of the diocesan newspaper, the New Earth, for several years. At their home parish in Wisconsin, Charlie has been increasingly involved in lay ecclesial ministry and adult faith formation.

Dalene (Wadeson) (Nudell) Trende
Dalene (Wadeson) (Nudell) Trende, 87, of Mundelein IL passed away January 13, 2014 at the Midwest Palliative & Hospice Care Center in Glenview, IL. Dalene Vivian Wadeson was born on November 13, 1926 in Clifton Township, Cass County, Alice ND to Harry and Clara (Easton) Wadeson. Dalene graduated from Buffalo High School, Buffalo ND and Moorhead State Teachers College in Moorhead MN.

Dalene was united in marriage to Dale Edward Nudell on August 25, 1948 in Buffalo ND. They made their home in Marion ND and were blessed with three daughters and one son. Dale passed away in May 1959. Dalene moved her family to Browns Valley MN in 1961 where she taught English until her marriage to Fred Trende in June 1971. After she remarried, Dalene moved to Rosholt SD and was an active member of the Trondhjem Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, music, stamp collecting, traveling, genealogy and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Oregon-California Trails Association, and the Cass County Historical Society. When Fred retired from farming they moved to Watertown SD. After Fred's death she lived in Monticello MN, Delano MN and Mundelein IL.

Edna Marion Kelly
Edna Marion Luoto was born October 22, 1919 in Fullerton, ND to Matt and Fannie (Krapu) Luoto. She grew up on the family farm near Fullerton. She graduated High School there in 1939. Edna married Emil Kelly, May 22, 1943 in Moorhead, MN. They moved to Fargo in 1944 and Edna graduated from Chicago Hair Dressing Academy. Edna worked for Koppleman’s and later owned and operated Kelly’s Beauty Shop.

Edna was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Fargo for many years. She loved music, audio books, reading and painting.

Esther Lillian Close
Esther Lillian Close, 105, died Friday, January 17, 2014, at Linn Manor Care Center in Marion, Iowa. She was born to Elizabeth (Meyer) and Samuel Blume in Dunn County, Wisconsin, on February 16, 1908. She graduated from Menomonie (WI) High School, and enrolled in Dunn County Normal to prepare to become a teacher. She graduated from Normal in 1927, and the following fall, began teaching in Ridgeland, WI.

Esther was married to Ernest Close on November 16, 1929. Three children were born, a daughter who died in infancy; a daughter, Juan Marie (Jo); and a son, John Eugene, (Jack).

Chris Van Hal
Chris Van Hal was born on June 21, 1924 in Pipestone, MN, the son of Chris and Gertie (Miedema) Van Hal. As a young man he moved to the Marion, ND area and attended rural school. Chris was a custom baler for several years. On March 24, 1953, he was united in marriage to Cornelia DeBoer. They made their home in Valley City, ND where he later began doing carpentry work. After a time, Chris worked for his brother, Vance, doing home and apartment construction. In 1970, he began his own home building business. Chris built his first pickup camper and he and Cornelia enjoyed many camping and fishing trips to the Minnesota lakes area.

Cornelia passed away on August 30, 1995. Chris continued living in Valley City until June 2012 when he moved to Elim Care in Fargo, ND.

FARGO – A pinball arcade is coming to downtown Fargo. Tilt Pinball will open sometime this month in former office space on the main floor of an apartment building at 413 Broadway, said owner Scott Nelson.
