John Harvey Wastvedt
John Harvey Wastvedt flew west on March 10, 2014. He undoubtedly flew his final flight low and inverted, hanging from the shoulder straps, with that huge grin of his lighting up the sky.

John was born December 22, 1922, son of Hilda and George Wastvedt in Hawley, Minnesota. It was in that quintessential midwestern small town that he would find his two great loves - Laurene (the "prettiest gal in town") and flying. His dream of flying took off at the age of five, sitting on his father's lap at the local movie house watching the newsreel of Charles Lindbergh's landing at LeBourget. John would spend the rest of his childhood building model airplanes, reading the exploits of World War I fighter aces, looking skyward and chasing down the occasional barnstormer hoping for a ride. World events soon landed him in the cockpit of the hottest aircraft of its era - the F4U Corsair. His carrier-based Marine fighter squadron VMF-124, would participate in the battle for Iwo Jima and numerous raids on Tokyo.
