FARGO - Financial counselor Duane Emmel says Benjamin Franklin’s famous quotation is missing one certainty of modern-day life. “It’s sort of like death and taxes, and student loans,” he said. A new report from the New York Federal Reserve shows it’s a familiar certainty for a growing number of Americans. Nearly 40 million now have student loans, with an average of $25,000 per borrower.

Duane Schultz
Duane Anderson Schultz, 86, of Jamestown, ND, died Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Sanford in Fargo, surrounded by his family.
Duane Anderson Schultz was born August 17, 1926 at Detroit, MI, the son of Adolph Berg and Anna Marie (Anderson) Schultz. The family relocated to North Dakota when Duane was 2 years old. He grew up on a farm located between Kathryn and Fort Ransom, ND. He attended school in Kathryn, graduating from Kathryn High School in 1944. In October of that year he entered the US Army and in 1947, transferred to the US Air Force. During his military career he was rated as a Liaison Pilot and flew clandestine and rescue missions during WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Cold War. Military awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, DSM (GBr), Order of the Red Star 2nd Class (USSR) , DFC (GBr), and Fouraguerre (Fr). He married Dorothy May Dalton on October 6, 1948 in Warrington, England; she died on January 18, 1991. He retired from the Air Force in April of 1966 with the rank of CWO-3 and he was recalled for a short special mission in 1967. He then worked for the US Post Office as a mail carrier for 17 years until retirement. On October 23, 2003, he married his high school sweetheart, Jessie Claire Hanson Hinger at Jamestown and they made their home in Jamestown.
