GRAND FORKS – Arthur Gustave Sorlie is remembered today as the namesake for the Sorlie Memorial Bridge spanning the Red River here. He served as North Dakota’s 14th governor from 1925 to 1928, and was a successful Grand Forks businessman as the owner of a bakery that made bread and crackers.

Donald Spiekermeier, 86, Sheldon, passed away February 28, 2013 at Sanford Health, Fargo ND. Donald Lawrence Spiekermeier was born February 15, 1927 to John and Bessie Spiekermeier at Sheldon, North Dakota. He grew up in Sheldon and graduated there. He farmed for many years and also worked various other jobs throughout his life. Donnie had been at the Good Samaritan Center in Arthur since 2006, where he enjoyed his time with fellow residents and the staff. Donald is survived by his three children, Lynn (Jan) Spiekermeier, Colorado, Paula (Dan) Aspelund, Minnesota, and David (Pauline) Spiekermeier, Iowa, along with 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He also leaves brothers Jack (Marlyss), Roy, (Anna Mae), and sister Mary (Pat) Boyle. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, March 4 at St. Mary’s, Sheldon, ND. Interment will be in St Mary’s Cemetery, Sh

Dorothea was born in Amenia, ND on Oct. 11, 1926 to Arthur and Cunegundes (Connie) Schmit, the 3rd of 4 children. She went to Grade and High School at Casselton ND, graduating in 1944. She went to school in Fargo ND for Western Union telegraph operators, graduating on her 18th birthday in 1944. She worked in Fargo ND, Detroit MI, Los Angeles and Oakland CA before her marriage.

Palmer A. Amundson Jr., age 86 of Waubun, MN, died Friday, February 22, 2013, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Palmer Arnold was born July 18, 1926, the son of Palmer A. and Anna (Boutto) Amundson Sr. in Virginia, MN. He grew up near Virginia and graduated high school from Cook, MN. Following high school, Palmer worked in the mines before entering the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge, Palmer attended college in California for airplane mechanics. He then moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he worked for Northwest Airlines as a mechanic. Palmer met Laurena Brehm and they were united in marriage on September 2, 1952, in Minneapolis.

Vivian R. Penner, 80, Fargo passed away Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Villa Maria Nursing Home, Fargo.

Vivian was born March 5, 1932 in Crete, ND to Arthur and Matilda (Luttman) Bruns. She graduated from Stirum High School in 1949. She worked in Gwinner for a few months upon graduating, before attending North Dakota Normal and Industrial School at Ellendale. She taught in two different rural country schools near Stirum. Vivian married Lorrin Meyer on October 3, 1954 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Stirum. Lorrin passed away on November 6, 1970. Vivian married Abe Penner on October 28, 1971 in Grace Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Lorraine Dixon LeDoux
Lorraine Crooks was born August 25, 1924 on the family farm in Arthur, ND. The family moved to Fargo in 1933.

In 1942 she married Everett Dixon. They had two daughters, Genevieve (David) Kramer and Karen (Bernard) Meyer, and two stepdaughters Grace (Bernard) Stack and Yvonne (Daniel) Scott. Everett died in 1978.

Genevieve Ava Rieke was born June 29, 1927 in Fargo, ND to Louis and Era (Burgess) Rieke. She grew up on the family farm near Erie and graduated from Erie High School. She married Robert L. Schroeder Sr. on June 5, 1945 in South Dakota. They made their home near Erie where they farmed for many years and raised seven children. Gen was a member of the homemakers club and enjoyed gardening, baking and sewing.
