Jeffrey Jerome Braaten, 54, of Portland, ND, unexpectedly passed away peacefully at his farm on February 8, 2014. He was born on November 30, 1959 in Mayville, ND to Jerome and Arlene (Stenstad) Braaten. He graduated from May-Port High School in 1978 and from Wahpeton School of Science in 1980 with a diesel mechanic degree. On January 10, 1981, he married Pamela Olek at St. John's Catholic Church in Wahpeton, ND.

Jeff worked at Valley Equipment in Mayville, ND for many years and eventually took over the family farm west of Portland, ND. Most recently he owned Braaten Construction & Repair and was in the middle of officiating the high school basketball season.

Albert J. Myers, 66, Fargo, ND died Wed., Feb. 5, 2014 at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo.

Albert Joseph Myers was born June 30, 1947 to Thomas C. and Rita (Miller) Myers in Poughkeepsie, NY. He attended St. Peter’s Parochial School, where he was an active member and altar boy. He also attended Our Lady of the Lourdes High School, graduating in 1966. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Naval Hospital Corpsman School, Great Lakes, IL. He was sent to Vietnam in May 1967; in the midst of battle Al was injured while attempting to rescue injured marines. After his time in the jungle he assisted in setting up a children’s hospital in Dang Ha, Vietnam with the Third Marine Division.

Douglas Howard Hanson
Douglas Howard Hanson, 65 of Fargo, North Dakota, died Sunday January 26, 2014 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Doug was born in Fargo, ND on October 22, 1948 to Howard and Betty (Anderson) Hanson. He graduated from Fargo North High School. He found employment through Vocational Rehabilitation, and also for Fargo Parks and Recreation as scoreboard keeper and diamond maintenance.

He had many interests and talents. Doug was truly one of a kind. He enjoyed spending time with family and traveling. He especially enjoyed working the DJ booth at his cousin's resort and lodge. He will be missed by all who knew him.

David Allen Hedland
David Allen Hedland was born to A. Yvonne and Hubert Hedland on January 13, 1951 in Fargo, ND. On January 24, 2014, he lost his battle with cancer.

David graduated from Hatton High School in 1969. Later that year he joined the Marine Corp and served his country with a tour in Vietnam. On December 28, 1969, he married Laurel Hanson. David received an Associate Degree in Parks and Recreation in Bottineau, ND and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education majoring in Biology and Physical Education at Mayville, ND. He spent several years teaching and coaching in the surrounding area. Throughout these years, he has touched many lives.

Dorothea Mae Smith Norgaard of Good Samaritan Center of Arthur, ND, passed on Tuesday evening, January 22, 2014. Dorothea was born to Clarence Arnold and Roselin Rowland Smith Sr. July 22, 1925, at Howard, South Dakota. She grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa, graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School, while working at the war plant making radio crystals (batteries). She met and married Roy K. Norgaard and moved to the prairies of North Dakota. They had two daughters, Pamela (Gordon) Sundstrom, Colorado Springs, CO, and Patricia (Richard "Skip) Taylor of Fargo; seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Eleanor Damgard of Omaha, NE, brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Dorthy Norgaard of Finley, ND; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins around the US.

Visitation is 2-4 pm Sunday with a prayer service at 4pm at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo. The funeral is 2pm Monday at Hope Lutheran Church, North Campus, Fargo. Burial will be at a later date in Memory Gardens, Valley City, ND.

Marian Whitehead was born August 22, 1924 near Conway, ND. ,the daughter of Henry & Mary Etta (Fisher) Whitehead. In 1943 she graduated from Walsh County Ag School in Park River, ND. She then attended Union Commercial College in Grand Forks, ND. After graduating, she worked for Honeywell in Minneapolis, MN. She returned to Larimore and was office manager for C & R Welding in Larimore until retirement in 1996 when the business was sold.

Esther Lillian Close, 105, died Friday, January 17, 2014, at Linn Manor Care Center in Marion, Iowa. She was born to Elizabeth (Meyer) and Samuel Blume in Dunn County, Wisconsin, on February 16, 1908. She graduated from Menomonie (WI) High School, and enrolled in Dunn County Normal to prepare to become a teacher. She graduated from Normal in 1927, and the following fall, began teaching in Ridgeland, WI.

Esther was married to Ernest Close on November 16, 1929. Three children were born, a daughter who died in infancy; a daughter, Juan Marie (Jo); and a son, John Eugene, (Jack).
