PERHAM, Minn. – Jordan Hein scored a game-high 14 points and the Perham Yellowjackets dictated play in a 53-40 victory over Minnesota Class 2A No. 6-ranked Pelican Rapids on Friday night in Heart O’ Lakes boys basketball. The final score was identical to the previous game between the two clubs, which was won by Pelican Rapids.

Martell V. Erickson
Martell passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at his home at Edgewood Vista surrounded by his loving family. Martell was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother.
Martell was born on October 2, 1926, the son of Theodore and Alma (Ellestad) Erickson near Kindred, ND. He grew up on the family farm and attended Riverside Country School. Martell graduated from Kindred High School in 1944. He was drafted in the United States Army in January of 1946 and received his basic training in Anti Aircraft Artillery at Fort Bliss, Texas. He served overseas in Japan in the 3186 Signal Corps Battalion. After his discharge he returned to North Dakota. Martell was united in marriage to the love of his life, Joyce Brun in Fargo on October 17, 1953. They made their home in Kindred until moving to the farm near Kindred in 1955 where they raised their family and farmed with his brother Kenneth. Martell and Joyce retired from farming in 1989 and moved to Fargo in 1993. They had most recently made their home at Edgewood Vista. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Barbara Jean Brand
Barbara Jean Brand passed away at home on January 18th, 2013 surrounded by family, friends, and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Barb was born on June 19th, 1952 in Valley City, ND to Arlene and Douglas Larson. She grew up and attended school in Valley City. She graduated from Valley City High School in 1970 and from Valley City State University in 1974 with a degree in Education. After college she had various different jobs. One of which was a teaching job in Bird Island, MN where she met her husband Michael Brand. Barb and Mike were married on December 27, 1975. Together they made their home in Valley City, ND and had two children.

Janice R. Haugen
Janice R. Haugen, age 88, of Moorhead, MN, formerly Lake Park, MN, died on Sunday, January 13, 2013, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.
Janice Reann Bergeson was born on January 8, 1925 to Reno and Annie (Skei) Bergeson at home in Lake Park. Janice was baptized and confirmed at Lake Park Lutheran Church and attended school in Lake Park, graduating from Lake Park High School in 1943. Janice worked her way through NDSU and graduated with an education degree in Home Economics in 1947. She was active in many campus organizations while at NDSU including the marching band. She initially worked as a county extension agent in the area. Leroy and Janice were married at Lake Park Lutheran Church on January 7th 1950 and were lovingly married for over 50 years. After marrying Leroy she substitute taught in Lake Park and began raising her family. She started teaching Home Economics full time in 1958 where she impacted many students for over 25 years including making many trips to the Twin Cities as FHA advisor. Her students learned many valuable life skills from her. Their children and grandchildren were a focal point of their lives. They lived on the family farm north of Lake Park from 1950 until after LeRoy’s death on November 27, 2000. Throughout the years, Janice was involved in many aspects of the community and education. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren as well as her lifelong friends. She was always busy with sewing, cooking, gardening, and canning.
