Gerald Kavanaugh
Gerald Kavanaugh passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on March 1, 2014 while surrounded by his loving and blessed family.

Jerry was born on December 5, 1927 in Fargo to Johanna (Fridgen) and Joseph Kavanaugh. Jerry and his two brothers grew up on North Terrace during the time of the Great Depression. Jerry was a scholar, an altar boy, a fine all-around athlete and an Eagle Scout. After he graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1945, he attended the University of Notre Dame. During this time he enlisted in the Navy, and served honorably for two years aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea. After completing his service, he resumed his studies at Notre Dame. He then attended and graduated from the UND School of Medicine, and completed his medical studies at Northwestern University, graduating in 1954. After starting his medical career in Internal Medicine, he later changed his specialty to Cardiology.

Beatrice May Montzka was born on December 12, 1929 to Edward and Clara (Kriefall) Montzka in Minneapolis, MN. She grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1947. She then attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1951.

Thelma Houglum
Thelma Houglum, 92, Ulen, MN, formerly Waubun, MN, died Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

Thelma Gudrun Otterson was born December 22, 1921, near Syre, MN, to Nicolai and Hilda Otterson. She attended school at Meadowland Country School near Syre, graduated from Twin Valley High School in 1939 and Moorhead State Teachers College in 1941. Following graduation, Thelma taught school at Cheerful Nook Country School near Flom, MN, where she met her husband and life partner, Monroe Houglum. Following their marriage in 1943 they lived a short time in Newport News, VA, where Monroe was stationed with the U.S. Army and Thelma worked at the Point of Embarkation supporting the war effort. In 1946, Thelma and Monroe moved to Waubun where they would live for the next 59 years. During this time Thelma stayed busy raising three sons and a daughter, working with the Cub Scouts as a Den Mother, the American Legion Auxiliary and being very active at Trinity Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and worked at many activities and projects both for the church and the Ladies Aid.

Gertrude Neys
Gertrude Neys, 95, of Buchanan, ND, died Friday, February 21, 2014 at Eventide at Hi-Acres, Jamestown.

Gertrude was born on September 8, 1918, on a farm near Buchanan, ND, the daughter of Sylvester and Helen (Wilma) Blaskowski. She attended the Rudnick country school and Buchanan grade school. Gertrude was active with the St. Margaret’s Alter Society and grew flowers to be used on the altar. She married Louis Neys on November 27, 1946 at the Pingree Parish house. They lived on a farm near Buchanan where she raised six children and was active in the V.F. W. Auxiliary and St. Margaret’s Catholic Church. Louis died on June 27, 1974. Gertrude was a cook for the Buchanan Public School for many years. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed cooking, baking, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Barbara Jo Eiden-Molinaro, 62, died unexpectedly from rare complications of chemotherapy on February 15, 2014 at OSU Medical Center in Columbus, OH.

Born October 31, 1951, Barbara graduated from Brainerd MN High School (1970). She earned a Bachelors in Political Science from Concordia College, Moorhead MN, (1974) and a Masters in Theology from Hamma School of Theology at Wittenberg University (1978).
