HAWLEY, Minn. – The house where a fire here claimed a teenager’s life last Sunday still sits surrounded by yellow police tape.
On the corner of Sixth Street and Elizabeth Street, mourners created a tribute to Rylie Efterfield, the 15-year-old girl who died in the early morning fire.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Though Matt Pederson hadn’t ever met Rylie Efterfield, he decided to honor her memory at the Becker County Fair next weekend. Efterfield died July 28 in a Hawley house fire. She was 15.
“I’ve never had a chance to meet the family, but hopefully they’d do the same thing for us,” Pederson said of neighbors helping neighbors in a time of need.

The weeklong Rodeo Fest in Hawley, Minn., kicks it up heading into the weekend. The Boy Scouts serve up a pitchfork steak fondue from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Hawley Community Center for $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
