Neighbors, in recently listing people from the Fargo-Moorhead region who made it big in the world of entertainment over the years, missed some major stars. “You can’t forget Angie Dickinson, from Kulm, N.D.,” wrote John Donahue, Fargo. But yes we did, John, as Myron Finsterling also pointed out when he wrote, “You neglected Angie Dickinson. In today’s parlance, she was ‘hot.’ ”
A column about the use of clotheslines in the past was “precisely reminiscent of the way my mother used it, and it brings to mind a (non-clothesline) story from the male side of housekeeping,” writes Ed Hentges, Fountain City, Wis.
Here’s feedback concerning past Neighbors’ topics.
The story: Carey McWilliams, the Fargo man who has gained fame as a hunter even though he is blind, was going to be filmed by HBO as he hunted for mountain lions in Nevada in February.
It was Jan. 4, 1938, when 18 people gathered in Fargo to form a stamp club.
Their first order of business was what to name it. Their decision was to call it the WDAY Stamp Club, because they met in the WDAY radio studios.
An email came recently from a woman who objected to this column’s use of the term “gals.” She said it was “sexist.”
Wondering if that term – and the use of “guys,” which the woman also doesn’t like – offended others, Neighbors asked for this column’s readers’ opinions.
You wouldn’t think Lance Johnson of Dilworth, famed for his Johnson Organ Co. and his organ playing, would ever hit a wrong note. But he admits he did, in terms of behavior, when he was a kid in Fergus Falls, Minn., becoming what he calls “the subject of a new type of punishment that I can assure you is 100 percent effective.”
Even though Gary Westerholm and his wife, Joyce, of Fargo, are spending the winter in Surprise, Ariz., they keep an eye on things back home. So, with North Dakota celebrating its 125th year of statehood, Gary has dug up what he calls “some little-known facts” about the state, adding “I bet even those of you living there don’t know some of this.”
