Q. Last fall you told us how to start geraniums by mixing sand with peat moss and taking cuttings from healthy plants. I did this and have about 10 plants growing in small Styrofoam cups. Should you transplant them into clay or plastic pots in just planting mix or a mixture?
I enjoy good naturedly teasing Martha Stewart. She’s such easy pickings. Her list of must-do spring gardening tasks includes cooking watercress soup with freshly picked ramps. Just between you and me, I thought a ramp was used to launch a boat in lake country.
Q. We’re interested in getting milkweed seeds so we can start some in our backyard. We have many zinnias and do see monarch butterflies in summer, but would like to attract more. Do you have a good source? – Russ Hanson, Fargo
FARGO - Last summer Jada Wraalstad grew a 16-pound cabbage, and she recently won $1,000 for her efforts. The 10-year-old fourth-grader at Clara Barton-Hawthorne Elementary School in Fargo grew the cabbage as part of the national Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program.
Soon we’ll be busy pruning, planting and weeding with less time to ponder and plan. Because none of us are ever really “done” landscaping, early spring is a great time to consider plant material that provide healthy snacks.
