MOORHEAD - With his white beard and dressed in dusty boots and denim overalls, Larry Longtine certainly looks the part of a woodcarver as he stands near the sleek, to-scale carousel horse he made.
A carving project of that magnitude can be intimidating.
“You have to think about one part at a time, then they aren’t so bad,” Longtine said.
BATTLE LAKE, Minn. – The Lake Region Review is seeking quality fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry by writers in Minnesota and eastern North Dakota for inclusion in the Lake Region Review 3 literary magazine.
BISMARCK – Gov. Jack Dalrymple and the North Dakota Tourism Division, along with AAA, are sponsoring the 2013 Governor’s Photo Contest through Aug. 23.
Any North Dakota amateur photographer is invited to submit entries. One winner will be selected in each category, and a $200 cash prize will be awarded to the photographer of each selected photo.
BISMARCK – As a 3-year-old, Erik Hougen went to football games with his dad and would later come home and draw pictures of the game. His drawings consisted of large, scribbly circles as heads and long stick legs.
“We got some pretty interesting drawings of what football looks like,” his dad, John Hougen, said.

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The old photographs and glass plates lay abandoned, dirty and dusty for years before David Cooper found them in his parent’s photo studio. It turned out they were shot by Danish emigre Niels Larson Hakkerup, who set up shop in Bemidji around 1900 and is considered one of the leading portrait photographers of American Indians.
