What Does It Take to Be an Expert?
I have no letters after my name. Okay, officially I have a B.A., which in today's climate stands less for Bachelor of Arts as it does for Buy Additional -- credits, tuition, college time -- leading t...

Mob Rule rules
There's a disturbing trend that seems to be appearing in ND & MN politics: our legislators refusing to put on their big boy and big girl panties and make sound, sensible decisions. Rather they tur...

DIY Fabric Animal Decor
Our second bathroom is the kid's bathroom. When I first moved in to our house, the room had been painted a teal and dark pink color to match the fish-designed shower curtain. Personally, the color com...

The Advent Grinch
Yesterday was Christmas! It was a great day for the family, a great day of travel, and a great Christmas service at church. The sermon was fantastic - it always is in my eyes (my huz is the pastor, bu...

faith fridays: messages in the sky
I've got a fixation that I'm having a hard time shaking. When it takes hold -- and it often does while the five kids and I are cruising along in the minivan -- everyone knows what's coming. The teens ...

Budget guidelines merely first step
Becky Ronkowski (letter, May 8) should not be frustrated with The Forum’s editorial on Gov. Jack Dalrymple’s budget guidelines. In fact, she is the one practicing partisan politics by trying to portray the first simple step in the long budget process as pandering.By David J. Chapman, West Fargo , May 22, 2012
Workers’ comp is corrupt to its core
Patrick Springer’s reporting (May 13) is spot on! I once was a medical reviewer for Workforce Safety and Insurance and eventually was fired because I dared to find that workers were in fact injured.By Paul Larsen, Bozeman, Mont. , May 22, 2012
Another Devils Lake outlet sends more pain downstream
Both the west-end and east-end outlets from Devils Lake will soon be operating, the North Dakota State Water Commission recently announced. That could mean increased flows in the Sheyenne River, as the two outlets will add a total of 600 cubic feet per second to what is already in the river. By late summer that will mean more than 10 times as much water as normal in the river.By Richard Betting, Valley City, N.D. , May 22, 2012
GOP places politics over policy
Republican lawmakers, fresh off the 2012 session, are taking a victory lap around Minnesota. It’s a brazen move, given their legislative record over the past two years.By Cynthia Moothart , May 22, 2012
Oil Patch needs will be addressed
To those in western North Dakota who are (justifiably) freaking out about the dramatic changes caused by the “oil boom”:By Bridget Atwood, Ada, Minn. , May 22, 2012
Vote for Sobolik a vote for balance
A vote for Melissa Sobolik is a vote for balance with the future in mind. As a lifelong resident of Fargo, I am proud of my city and proud of our leaders. My vote on June 12 for Sobolik is not about ousting a commissioner, but more about giving the next generation a seat at the table.By Shannon Charpentier, Fargo , May 22, 2012
‘Clogged court’ fears on Measure 3 overblown
In her May 17 letter to the editor regarding the Religious Liberty Restoration Amendment, (Measure 3), Cheryl Bergian details the same undocumented allegations about litigation and clogging the courts we’ve heard time and time again.By Lydia Trandem, Fargo , May 22, 2012
Extend infrastructure tax to keep Fargo moving forward
Spring was kind to us this year. The sun is shining as runners are training, walkers are enjoying the sidewalks and paths, bikers are zipping down the dry roads, and the town is coming alive. We enjoyed a blessedly normal spring without a big flood fight.By Tim Mahoney, Fargo , May 21, 2012
Marcil dedication much appreciated

Sincere thanks for the benefit
We would like to thank all of the individuals and organizations who shared their time and contributions to support the benefit for Craig Thompson. The donated funds are being used to help defray medical costs incurred during his extended hospital stay in Minneapolis.By Denise Stewart, West Fargo , May 21, 2012
Measure 3’s language has passed previous court tests
Whenever someone wants to defeat legislation, they are sure to claim that proposal is “vague” and “unclear,” whether or not it is true. What is surprising, however, is that some attorneys would employ the same tactic with Measure 3.By Christopher Dodson , May 20, 2012
No one better for House than Kalk
I ask you to join me in voting for Brian Kalk for U.S. House in the June 12 primary election. I have had the honor of knowing Kalk for about five years.By Tammy Owens, Fargo , May 20, 2012
Measure 3 usurps individual rights
In a few days, I will be 84 years old. I am a lifelong Catholic, and I realize that no public issue has ever been so troublesome to me as is Measure 3 on the June 12 ballot in North Dakota. It has been introduced by a group that is led by the two North Dakota Catholic bishops.By George A. Sinner, Fargo , May 20, 2012
