American Crystal Sugar Company has agreed to pay a $50,000 civil penalty and take corrective actions to settle alleged violations of state environmental protection and reporting regulations at its facility in East Grand Forks, Minn.

FARGO (AP) — Sugar beet cooperatives in the Red River Valley of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota are anticipating record yields, meaning farmers might not be allowed to harvest all of their acres.
If “cap-and-trade” legislation were to move forward as currently framed, it would be the death knell to the “world-class efficient” sugar beet industry in the Red River Valley, and much of the rest of the country, a top executive of American Crystal Sugar Co. said this week.

Benedict instrumental in American Crystal, ProGold plant
Patrick Benedict spent his final hours in his comfort zone, cruising around Wilkin County, Minn., checking on fields being planted with sugar beet seed.
Attorneys told the president of American Crystal Sugar Co. that a federal judge in San Francisco on Friday made no decision but rather took under advisement the request to halt immediately the use of any Roundup Ready sugar beet seed.
