March 26 – Area residents got the worst news possible Thursday: The Red River could reach a record 42 or 43 feet by the weekend. And the water might stay that high for seven days.
Never before had anyone seen a flood of such magnitude.
Any lingering doubts about this flood’s fury were cast aside.
It was the news no one wanted to hear: The Red River flood crest was now expected to be between 39 and 41 feet – a foot higher than anyone thought.
Equally worrisome: The crest would likely arrive by week’s end, a day earlier than originally thought.
Through the 2009 Stimulus Package, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has made available up to $145 million to eligible landowners through the floodplain easement component of its Emergency Watershed Program.
