The overwhelming “yes” vote for a Fargo flood protection sales tax underscores two truths: First, Fargo residents, whether they live near the river or on high ground, have had enough of fighting major floods and want something done. Second, the city’s elected leaders and administrative professionals enjoy extraordinary support among the people of the city.
Attention Fargo taxpayers: The city wants to get you to vote higher taxes into place before you forget the flooding from this year. However, they also want you to forget that you’re already paying 1.5 percent on top of high property taxes.
Funny thing how most of the north-side and central Fargo residents used to blame the southsiders for not having decent flood protection and laughed at us because we will be required to buy flood insurance as a result of the ’97 flood. Now with the ’09 flood, I can laugh back or feel everyone’s pain when the rest of Fargo is added to the new flood map.
