The YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties School Age Department will host a “Lights on After School” event from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Island Park in Fargo in conjunction with North Dakota’s “Lights on After School Day.”
In one month, Stephanie’s life has changed dramatically.
The 24-year-old has gone from staying at the YWCA Emergency Cass Clay Shelter with daughter Amber to living in an apartment. She has gone from not being able to afford a $10 prescription for her daughter to a better-paying job. And she has a new windshield for her pickup, new clothes for her child and a renewed optimism about her future.

Late at night, after Stephanie has finished laundry, put her freshly bathed toddler, Amber, to bed and spent time visiting with friends in the YWCA shelter’s coffee lounge, she goes to her small room.
It’s not easy sleeping in a homeless shelter.
The sounds are strange. Faraway doors slam as residents scurry in from late-night jobs or nocturnal movie-watching marathons in the TV lounge. Children are crying in their rooms.
