Recently, a Midwestern farm newspaper editor wrote me: “We have a lot of people in our area who were hit by tornadoes, or know people who were. How do we cope emotionally with loss of homes, farms, property and loved ones months after the fact?
Let me state at the outset, I think we need only about 50 pairs of shoes during our entire lifetime.
Maybe we need even fewer, depending on a number of factors, such as where and how hard we work, how long we live, whether we can afford shoes and not much else.
Last week I explained how post-traumatic stress disorder can develop. Reacting to a traumatic event with alarm is normal, but when we overreact with alarm to any reminder or cue of the trauma to the degree that distress interferes with our daily lives, it’s time to take corrective actions.
In many ways, post- traumatic stress disorder is a normal response that has gone haywire.
The initial trigger situation might be: the explosion of a bomb alongside an Afghanistan road; severe farm financial pressures, such as loan foreclosure; getting hit on a highway by a drunken driver whose vehicle swerved into your lane; or any severe traumatic event.
Most single farmers and ranchers don’t like feeling lonely.
They worry about finding a compatible partner who understands the rigors associated with raising crops or livestock and living in the country. Finding “the right person” can be difficult.
Depression is a very real problem for many farmers. Usually farmers and ranchers don’t like to talk about feeling depressed except when joking around. Like, “These prices sure make me depressed.”
There are many kinds of depression.
I do some of my best thinking in the raspberry patch.
At the end of a mind-numbing day that has frazzled me, from late July until the first hard frost, I often end up picking red raspberries from our ever-bearing canes.
As I take over the production of this weekly column, I am glad to see the outpouring of affection by many readers to Dr. Val Farmer.
His kind and helpful words had a positive effect on many people during his 28 years of writing this column. Many readers and others he has assisted have developed positive attachments to Dr. Val.
