MAHNOMEN, Minn. – Thomas Lee Fairbanks stood solemnly, looking down or straight ahead, as District Court Judge Jeff Remick handed down the mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole for the murder of Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Dewey plus two 10-year sentences to be served consecutively for shooting at other officers.
MAHNOMAN, Minn. – A man charged in the deaths of two people last week surprised a Mahnomen County courtroom today when he pleaded guilty to murder and other charges during what was expected to be a routine pre-trial hearing.
Man lived in facility near victims’ home
A man held on suspicion of killing two elderly rural Mahnomen County, Minn., residents is being described as generous and trusted by others at a center for chemically dependent people where he lived.
Mahnomen County (Minn.) Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Dewey, who was shot in the line of duty last year, suffered a seizure a few weeks ago, according to a post on his CaringBridge website by his wife, Emily Dewey.
Mahnomen County (Minn.) Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Dewey is expected to leave Craig Hospital, a rehabilitation hospital outside of Denver, Colo., sometime next week, according to his wife, Emily, who released the information through a hospital spokesman.
