Fargo - Let’s go back a decade when North Dakota State was beginning its move from Division II athletics to Division I. Who, back then, would have guessed that women’s basketball would have the toughest time making the move up?
FARGO - It was only 17 days ago when Saul Phillips was the head coach of a North Dakota State men’s basketball team that had just knocked off Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament. Spokane, Wash. - North Dakota State’s men’s basketball team got their one shining moment. That’s more than 283 Division I teams across the country can say. That’s more than what any Summit League team since 1998 can say. That’s more than what 32 other teams who lost Thursday and Friday in the NCAA tournament can say.
Spokane, Wash. - Dane Fife, an assistant coach for the Michigan State men’s basketball team that will be playing for an NCAA Division I tournament Sweet 16 appearance today in Spokane Arena, knows Saul Phillips. He still texts him almost every day.
SPOKANE, Wash. - Move over Wisconsin, Marquette, Notre Dame, Minnesota and Kansas State. Oklahoma is replacing you on top of the list of North Dakota State’s victims in its brief history of Division I athletics.
Spokane, Wash. - Lee Fitting is the guy who made downtown Fargo even trendier last fall. Fitting, if you recall, is the producer of ESPN’s “College GameDay” show that not only highlighted North Dakota State’s football team but the Fargo Theatre and about every other business along Broadway.
Fargo - With six North Dakota State seniors playing in what is most likely the last college men’s basketball game in the Bison Sports Arena, it seemed more than appropriate to honor them with a 30-minute tribute after Saturday night’s 78-68 win over Denver.
Fargo - This was eons ago, but I remember to this day overhearing my father complain about my high school basketball coach one night. My heart jumped for joy – since there were a few times I disliked how hard our coach pushed us.
