A good friend offered sincere, valuable feedback. She meant to help and advise. I heard criticism and disappointment. I tried to process it and respond thoughtfully but still messed up. I fear that I damaged the relationship.
This past week, I’ve thought a lot about women in leadership roles.
I attended a breakfast meeting sponsored by the FM Area Foundation’s Women’s Fund at which they asked us to think about barriers and opportunities for women at work, government roles and board service. We talked about awareness, child care, gender roles, expectations, unconscious bias, corporate boards, programs and laws.
This winter has been especially hard on skin, with prolonged sub-zero temps and wind. Then we come inside to a warm but dry home. The humidity readings of the indoor air are way down due to heating, so the water content of our skin evaporates, leading to very dry skin that can get irritated and bumpy.
I’ve told my son, Grant, that I have eyes in the back of my head so I can keep track of him. He had thoroughly inspected my scalp, but I’ve told him that these are invisible, but they are still there because I’m a mom.
Thanksgiving Day ... There is much to be grateful for: turkey with my favorite stuffing, smooth gravy, mashed potatoes, and between my in-laws and my family, I get to select from six different kinds of pie!
Like most people, I rarely accomplish absolutely everything on my daily to-do list. But over the years, I have a good track record when it comes to hitting big goals. College at Stanford, doctorhood, starting my own practice, welcoming my son Grant, writing ... Looking back, it seems like a lot of hard work and a bit of serendipity.
