FARGO — Like many people in the upper Midwest in March, Bobbi Jo Cody is ready for winter to be over. So she and husband Todd Cody, co-owners of The Red Silo vintage store, are doing something about it.
"Coming off a long winter, we're ready for spring," she says. "We want people to get out of their houses and visit, hang out with friends and family and have fun!"
The Red Silo is hosting the Red Silobration Retreat this Saturday at the Fargo Civic Center, 207 4th St. N., from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event includes live music from Lacey Guck and a fashion show with more than 30 vendors and demonstrations.
Rebecca Undem, author of "How Mommy Got Her Groove Back", is the keynote speaker.
Undem, a professional development speaker, delivers a simple message about living B.I.G — "Be Bold, Get Inspired and Choose Growth." A one-time financial professional living in Fargo, Undem and her husband made the unexpected, life-altering decision to move back to her small hometown to become fifth-generation farmers.
"I wasn't sure what ladder I was planning to climb, but I saw myself in a suit drinking overpriced coffee and living in 'the hustle,' " she says. "I never thought I'd be happy with the slower paced life I now live."
Her message at the Red Silobration Retreat is not to be afraid of letting go of your preconceived plans. She says she was excited to be part of the first ever Red Silobration moments after first meeting and talking to Bobbi Jo.
"Bobbi Jo and I just hit it off right away," Undem says. "We both grew up in small towns (Undem in Oakes, N.D., and Cody in Lisbon, N.D.), and I really liked what she was trying to do."
As a working mom of three children ages 3, 6 and 8, Undem says she knows it's not always easy to take time away from family for events like this, but she appreciates Bobbi Jo's efforts in creating, coordinating and hosting an event like Silobration.
"I like that the focus is on taking care of yourself," Undem says. "It's a whole day of indulgence that we sometimes feel guilty for. But it's absolutely something we need once in awhile."
Cody, who works as an elementary school teacher in addition to co-owning The Red Silo, says she first came up with the idea for the Red Silobration Retreat during winter break in January.
"I had a few quiet days off and when things get quiet my creative juices start to flow. I told myself, 'I want to have an event to make others feel good and I'm going to do this. It's going to be great.' It just took off. Some people might call me crazy, but here we are," she says.
Cody says she loves planning events like this and she's hoping people will enjoy the event as much as she's enjoyed putting it together.
"The purpose all along was to give people a day-long event full of relaxation, learning and laughter," she says.
