Number of early voters in Fargo could surpass past mayoral turnout

Early voting in Cass County likely will eclipse turnout for the previous mayoral election, the county auditor said Tuesday.

Voters cast 964 ballots Monday and Tuesday as part of the week of early voting before the June 10 election, Cass County Auditor Mike Montplaisir said.

About 2,100 people filled out early ballots in 2010.

“We’re probably on track to meet or exceed that,” Montplaisir said.

County residents set an early voting record in 2012 by casting more than 6,100 votes. But that was a presidential election year, and turnout in such races is typically much higher.

Montplaisir said he thinks the mayoral race this year, in which incumbent Dennis Walaker faces businessman Brad Wimmer, is driving the increase in early voter turnout.

He also said he expects stronger turnout in the election next week compared with the previous mayoral race, which drew about 12,000 votes.

Voters cast 400 early ballots Monday and 564 Tuesday, Montplaisir said.

Local voters will decide a total of nine races next week, including two seats on the Fargo City Commission and five spots on the city School Board.

Early voting runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Friday at the following locations:

  • Doublewood Inn, 3333 13th Ave S. in Fargo.
  • Hilton Garden Inn, 4351 17th Ave S. in Fargo.
  • Days Inn, 2050 Governor’s Drive, Casselton
