Shanley Hall of Fame, Deacon Award honors set for Saturday

Don and Jeaninne McAllister will be 2017 recipients of the Mike and Karen Hofer Deacon Award given annually to those who provide significant service and other contributions to the St. John Paul II Catholic Schools Network. FARGO — St. John Paul II Catholic Schools will hold the 10th annual Hall of Fame and Mike and Karen Hofer Deacon Award ceremony at Shanley High School on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The 2017 Hall of Fame inductees are Joseph Cichy, James Deutsch, and the 1958 Deacon football team.

— Cichy graduated from Shanley in 1967. He captained the 1966 Deacon football team and played for North Dakota State University. As a Bison, Cichy's teams were undefeated and won three conference titles and two national championships. Cichy earned bachelor's and medical and law degrees, practicing law for 30 years in Bismarck. He was also the executive director of the North Dakota Dental Association for 20 years.

In 1997 Cichy was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the first Bison player so honored. He was inducted into NDSU's Athletic Hall Of Fame four times (individually and three teams) and Shanley's Hall of Fame with the 1965 and 1966 football teams.

— James Deutsch graduated from Shanley in 1967. He played football and was a part of Shanley's 59-game unbeaten streak. Deutsch attended NDSU and was in the student senate and ROTC. Deutsch graduated in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in education. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served in the U.S., Europe and Panama for 12 years, attaining the rank of major. He returned to Fargo to work in sales and has received local and national awards.

— The 1958 Deacon football team had an undefeated season and won the North Dakota Class A football championship against Bismarck High School under coach Sid Cichy.

The Mike & Karen Hofer Deacon Award honors graduates, parents, staff and friends who have exemplified the ideals of a deacon through extensive service and contributions of time, talent and/or treasure to the JPII Catholic Schools.

The recipients of the 2017 award are William and Jane (Black) Marcil and Donald and Jeaninne McAllister.

— The Marcils have supported Shanley, the Fargo Catholic Schools Network Foundation (FCSN), the GROW Memorial Fund and JPII Schools for nearly 50 years. Jane is a 1956 Shanley graduate. William Marcil Sr. is the chairman of Forum Communications. He served as chairman of the original funding drive for the FCSN Foundation and was on its founding board.

— Don and Jeaninne McAllister have owned and operated Hurley's Religious Goods in Fargo since 1974 and have been consistent supporters of JPII Schools. Don died in February 2016. Jeaninne has served on several Catholic school boards.
