New nursing dean appointed at UND

GRAND FORKS - The University of North Dakota’s College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines announced Gayle Roux as its new dean Tuesday.

This comes after former Dean Denise Korniewicz was reassigned last summer because of faculty complaints about her behavior. Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Steven Light has been serving as interim dean.

Until last month, Roux served as an interim dean of the College of Nursing at Texas Women's University in Denton.

Roux will assume the role of dean Sept. 2.

According to her curriculum vitae, many of Roux’s studies, publications and grant research have been on the topic of women and pregnancy health.

Under Korniewicz, faculty members had complained of a “climate of fear, intimidation and retaliation.”

She defended herself in a letter to the Grand Forks Herald last month in which she cited incidents of faculty and staff using inappropriate language, the intimidation of junior nontenured faculty, and outdated teaching methods before her appointment as dean.

She also wrote that most of the school’s problems stemmed from inconsistent leadership with seven deans in nine years.
