FARGO—A long-vacant retail building is being turned into a self-storage facility.

U-Haul announced earlier this week that it purchased the former Sportsman's Warehouse building, 4901 13th Ave. S., which has been vacant for more than five years. After Sportsman's Warehouse filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009, Wholesale Sports Outdoor Outfitters bought the Fargo store and closed the doors in 2011.

It's now operating as U-Haul Moving & Storage of West Acres, and the business opened a temporary showroom on Feb. 20, according to a news release.

For now, the facility offers truck and trailer rentals, as well as towing equipment, moving supplies and portable moving and self-storage containers.

But the facility will continue to be renovated with plans to add 800 indoor self-storage units in the building, as well as professional hitch installation and propane services.

It's part of the company's corporate sustainability initiatives that include a focus on infill developments and adaptive reuse of existing buildings. The news release said the new location will also benefit those along the 13th Avenue corridor and West Fargo residents.

The new U-Haul facility is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call (701) 205-3260 or visit www.uhaul.com.
