FARGO—The new restaurant in a newly revamped hotel here is a place to gather, whether it's out-of-town visitors getting a bite to eat or locals getting together for a drink.

Urban 42 had its soft opening in late April, taking the place of the former Basies Restaurant and Lounge at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Fargo, 1635 42nd St. S.

It was a major piece of the hotel's work to transform from a Ramada Plaza & Suites to the Marriott brand that was finalized April 26. Hotel General Manager Carol Johnson said the Ramada's pool area, guest rooms, meetings spaces, hallways and other areas were also redone to prepare for the switch to Marriott.

Head Chef and Food & Beverage Manager Tom Collins said the open, modern Urban 42 with room for 166 diners is meant to be a good spot to get together with friends and family for meals, small plates, happy hour specials and craft cocktails or beer.

"The concept is more that down-to-earth type of food," he said, describing it as somewhere between fast casual and fine dining.

Opening again

Johnson said Urban 42 was designed to make everyone feel comfortable, no matter if they want to sit at a large table on the edge of the lobby with outlets so they can work or reserve one of the two private dining rooms.

"It's a gathering place," she said.

All Delta hotels try to achieve a regional look, according to Johnson, and officials behind the Fargo hotel's conversion to the new brand aimed for that by incorporating reclaimed wood accents, a modern and open floorplan and two large photos of bison as decor.

Restaurant Manager Jason Lundblad said employees also went through advanced training, including with a nationally recognized mixologist, to learn the new selection of craft cocktails that start with fresh juices and simple, basic ingredients. Urban 42 also serves local and regional craft beer.

Hotel guests and visitors can also now pick up a coffee or other beverage from an attached Starbucks that faces into the lobby on the edge of the restaurant.

The former Basies restaurant had to be closed for about two months to allow workers to completely renovate the space, meaning hotel guests had to settle for room service or eat in a mini, temporary lounge in a meeting room or alongside the pool. It wasn't ideal, Johnson said, but it was worth the temporary closure.

Now that things are up and running again, she said she'd like to see more locals dining at Urban 42. The restaurant does a Sunday brunch from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekly that draws its fair share of local residents, she said. Other events, such as weekday happy hour specials and Sunday night trivia contests, could get more than hotel guests coming in for a bite or drink, too.

Urban 42 will celebrate its grand opening 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, with attendees getting samples and tastings, demonstrations from restaurant staff and door prizes.
