Philippines to extradite priest accused of abusing two North Dakota boys

On July 13, 2017, Muriel went to her heavenly reward after years of caring for so many others. She was born at home in Oakes on September 9, 1919, a preemie daughter to Orville and Della (Smith) Cotten. A shoe box became her bassinet and an eye dropper her bottle. Muriel and her sister Mildred were baptized as teenagers by emersion in the James River west of Oakes. She attended school in Oakes and Ludden.

Muriel married Arne Hoikkala in March of 1940. They lived in Oakes and Hecla before moving to California for three years. They later moved to the Ludden area to farm. Arne passed away suddenly on her birthday in 1963. In April 1966, she married Ralph West.

Her hobbies besides caring for others were baking, playing bingo and most importantly spending time with her grandchildren.

Muriel is survived by her daughter, Karen (Lowell) Tripp of Oakes; sons, Roger (Carol) Hoikkala of Richfield, MN and Dale (Cindy) Hoikkala of Oakes; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Inez Poindexter of Joplin, MO and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Ernest and Kenneth and four sisters, Irene, Mildred, Margaret and Anna as well as their spouses.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 21, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Oakes. Burial will be at the Hecla City Cemetery in Hecla, SD.
