Letter: Taxpayers should not have to pay for DAPL mess
So, the feds turned down the request for $38 million to defray the costs from the Standing Rock protests. Rightly so. Why should the taxpayer be on the hook for costs rising from the Morton County Sheriff escalating the matter into an international incident?
Thousands of supporters came to protect the protectors from needlessly militarized police. The heavy-handed approach was not wise nor needed to protect North Dakotans. Furthermore, the Standing Rock Sioux are also North Dakotans.
The burden of the attempted intimidation should be paid by the persons who would benefit by it. Recover the money by raising the extraction tax on oil shipped through Dakota Access.
