McFeely: Balanced FCS bracket advantageous for NDSU

There has been much whining and gnashing of teeth the last several years in Fargo on Selection Sunday, the day the Football Championship Subdivision playoff committee announces its bracket for the postseason.

The whining and gnashing of teeth has come mostly from North Dakota State fans who believe their team is the target of a conspiracy by the committee. It has also come from media, including yours truly, who believe the committee members don’t pay as much attention to the nuances of FCS football as they should, given their appointment.

The uproar reached its peak in 2015 when the third-seeded Bison were put on the same side of the bracket as four other Missouri Valley Football Conference teams, the so-called Bracket of Death. The theory among fans and media was the that NCAA was overreacting to the previous season, when NDSU and Illinois State played for the title in Frisco, Texas, and wanted to make sure two teams from the same league did not make the final again.
