Standoff in Grand Forks mobile home park ends without incident

Forum editorial: Downtown street fair kicks off

The largest free outdoor event in North Dakota – the Downtown Fargo Street Fair – opens today at 10 a.m. and wraps up Saturday at 5 p.m. In its 39th year, the street fair has become one of the must-do summer festivals in the region.

It’s difficult to sustain an event for nearly 40 years. But the street fair has not only continued every summer but has improved and expanded during those four decades. It’s bigger today than ever, and the variety of attractions is more diverse than ever. For three days the historic (and revived) central business district will be alive with entertainment, food, crafts, art – and tens of thousands of people.

It takes a lot of work to make it happen every year. The Downtown Community Partnership and dozens of business and corporate sponsors put it all together. The result is a street fair that is recognized as one of the most successful in the nation.

Parking? It’s always a contradiction of sorts, that while city officials and others obsess over the alleged lack of parking downtown, crowds flocking to the street fair always seem to find places to park. Go figure.

Forum Communications Co. will again be serving up pork chops and fixins, prepared by the Underwood, Minn., Lions. Forum and WDAY personalities will be working under the big tent on the U.S. Bank plaza. It’s good fair fare for a good price, and has proved to be one of the more popular food stops through the years. “Choppin’ Around with the Forum Communications Co.” is open only today.

The weather looks good. The big downtown space between Sixth Avenue North and Main Avenue will be hopping. See you there.
