Letter: Carry extra veggies to food pantries

According to the September issue of Consumer Report, 126,000,000,000 pounds (or 63 million tons) of food is wasted in the United States each year. Of that 52 percent is produce. The wholesalers and grocers do their part by donating their extra product to food banks.

Restaurants donate their extra food to food kitchens. The balance of the wasted produce

comes from homes. We can do our part by better meal planning and making use of leftovers.

An excellent plan is to send all of our extra home garden produce to food pantries. There are

numerous food pantries in the Fargo area, and service organizations offer collection sites. Food

pantries provide to families in need.

If you are a home gardener and you have extra fruits and vegetables that your family cannot use, please find a food pantry. You know you are not going to eat that extra zucchini and tomato, so provide it to someone else for a healthy meal.
