Letter: Is the teachers' contract impasse 'all about the children'?
The Fargo School District pushed through the 127 Mill Levy issue with a 4,000 "yes" vote margin, obviously due to the strength of 3,200 district employees with a vested interest in their employer getting more property tax dollars. It was subsequently acknowledged in a Forum article that the union helped ensure the Mill Levy win.
Now an impasse has been declared over the "spoils" in the form of a $12.7 million gap in salary and benefit contract negotiations. It appears it is a "who gets the biggest piece of the pie" dispute that is going to arbitration. The story at the time of the March vote was "It's for the students." Oh, the irony of it all.
